Beth

Beth Berolzheimer is a media artist and activist who lives and teaches in Chicago. She creates videos, photographs, and multi-media installations. For over thirty years her career has existed on the edge of new technologies. Inspired by early European filmmaking, documentary and narrative film theory, art history, feminist and semiotic ideologies along with the personal is political, her work is aesthetically innovative. Her work creates a dense post-colonial critique that is rooted in a personal, visual iconography. Disturbed by the media representation of women she often uses stories that come from the lives of family and friends to reframe traditional narrative conventions. As a ten- year member of Women In The Director's Chair, an organization commited to alternative media that defies stereotypes, Beth developed relationships with artists and educators driven by political commitment. Subsequent collaborations included developing curricula for prison workshops, and then teaching collaboratively in the Chicago Juvenile Detention Center. She has collaborated with Beyondmedia, making videotapes about battered women and the NGO Forum for Women in China. In another collaboration with Beyondmedia she traveled to Russia and the Ukraine to document the rebuilding of society in the former Soviet Union by Jewish women after glasnost. Keeping abreast of ever-changing technologies Beth brought the first Avid digital non-linear editing systems to the Columbia College Film/Video Department in 1993. She is an Avid Certified Instructor and owns her own Avid. Beth has taught nationally at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and Columbia College where she is currently teaching Sculptural Installation in the Graduate Interdisciplinary Arts Department. In 2005 she teaches Digital Imaging I at C.I.A.
