But although he dips into a high-tech tool box to create his multimedia works -- using video, audio, spoken and written text and sculptured space -- Hill's works explore ideas rather than the medium he uses or its associated technology. "Some people use special effects to interest people through playing with the technology -- some people think that's art," says Donald Young, owner of the Donald Young Gallery where Hill's work shows locally. "It's the ideas behind the work that are important to Gary Hill, who was born in Southern California, began experimenting with video in 1973, by borrowing a camera and recording layers of his multiple selves in conversation. His earliest videos, "The Fall" and "Air Raid," were sound-and-image montages organized around ecological themes. His first video installation, "Hole in the Wall" (1974), featured a monitor placed in a hole cut through a wall that played back what was happening in the room. From 1975 to 1977, Hill was the artist-in-residence at the Experimental Television Center in Binghamton, N.Y. In the late 1970s, Hill began exploring concepts about how we use and understand language, work that continued into the 1980s, with fellowships from the Rockefeller and Guggenheim foundations and the National Endowment for the Arts. In 1985, he moved to Seattle, where he established a video program at Cornish College of the Arts. In 1992's "Tall Ships," among the more complex of his pieces, Hill layers the various elements in such a way that different viewers see distinct shows, according quite literally to how they approach and move through one of his installations. The piece was created for Documenta IX, an annual art show based in Kassel, Germany, and was included as part of the 1993 Whitney Biennial. It is now part of the Henry Art Gallery's permanent collection. Born 1951 in Santa Monica, California. Lives and works in Seattle, Washington.
