Looking Back/Looking Forward: A Symposium on Electronic Media Preservation: contents

The symposium was organized by the Experimental Television Center (ETC) in association with Independent Media Arts Preservation (IMAP), Bay Area Video Coalition and the Electronic Media Specialty Group of the AIC (American Institute for the Conservation of Artistic and Historic Works). Looking Back/Looking Forward was hosted by Downtown Community Television Center and was made possible with public funds from the Electronic Media and Film Program of the NYS Council on the Arts, and with assistance from IMAP, BAVC, MercerMedia and Dave Jones Design. The symposium was organized by Sherry Miller Hocking, Assistant Director of the Experimental Television Center, and independent consultant Mona Jimenez. The transcripts of the conference proceedings were created by DB Rohlfs Audio and Video Transcription, and edited by Carolyn Tennant and Sherry Miller Hocking.

  • Introduction Preservation

    Looking Back/Looking Forward is a symposium on electronic media preservation organized by the Experimental Television Center; it invited 58 artists, conservators, media arts staff and technical experts and is an activity of the Center’s Video History Project (begun 1994). The Video History Website (launched 2000) hosts nine interrelated databases with about 3,500 records and a Bibliography of over 1,000 entries. The Preservation area includes the commissioned papers Video Preservation and Reel to Real; Bay Area Video Coalition, with NEA funding, will produce a DVD due end of 2002.

  • Agenda Preservation

    Looking Back/Looking Forward: A Symposium on Electronic Media Preservation convened May 31–June 1, 2002 at Downtown Community Television Center with a reception at MercerMedia. Organized by the Experimental Television Center with IMAP and Bay Area Video Coalition and funded by the NYS Council on the Arts Electronic Media and Film Program, the program covered physical preservation and remastering (including 1/2” open reel workflows), economics, media formats, collection assessment and documentation of artists’ instruments and ephemera, with presentations by Luke Hones, Heather Weaver, Kacey Koeberer, Mona Jimenez and Sarah Stauderman.

  • Reports to the Field Preservation

    Experimental Television Center convened Looking Back/Looking Forward on May 31–June 1, 2002 at Downtown Community Television Center in New York, bringing over 50 media arts professionals, conservators, technicians and artists to address physical preservation of independent electronic media, related tools and ephemera. Sessions led by BAVC, Artists Television Access, George Eastman House and MoMA examined remastering workflows (including 1/2” open reel), formats, selection strategies, economics, oral histories and web documentation; BAVC received NEA funding to produce a videotape preservation DVD. The Video History Project, launched 2000 and directed by Sherry Miller Hocking with major contribution from Mona Jimenez, maintains resource databases and commissioned papers including Video Preservation: The Basics.

  • Saving the Images: A Report from the Looking Back/Looking Forward Symposium Preservation

    On May 31 and June 1 at Downtown Community TV Center in New York, over 50 media arts professionals convened for Looking Back/Looking Forward, a symposium on moving image preservation organized by the Experimental Television Center with IMAP and Bay Area Video Coalition. Sessions addressed physical preservation and remastering (including 1/2" open reel), economics, formats, collection assessment and capturing related histories; participants included representatives from museums, archives, media organizations and artist groups. Outcomes included transcripts for the ETC Video History site, a NEA-funded BAVC DVD (due late 2002), two commissioned papers (Video Preservation: The Basics; Reel to Real) and the Video History Project website (launched 2000) holding nine databases and about 3,500 records.
