Toggling between daydream and full-blown hallucination, iLL-Literacy is a music and performance collective that fuses elements of funk, hip-hop, spoken word, and interactive theatre for a sound and live experience that draws as much from the rich artistic and political history of its Oakland hometown as it does from the experimental and imaginative inclinations of its current Brooklyn base. iLL-Literacy's current live production, USBUiLLD, is a rich blend of live digital funk music, striking visual effects, and an evolved rendition of the powerful vocal performance that has garnered the collective acclaim over the years. With contributing efforts of live digital producer Ada Clock, USBUiLLD - directed by Kamilah Forbes (director of "Def Poetry Jam on Broadway" and Artistic Director of the Hip Hop Theater Festival) - assertively invites the audience not only to participate in the experience, but to shift the process and outcome of each show through an "open-sourced" exchange of sound and motion that the group has dubbed "digit.iLL.Funk."

    Jamie O'Neil presents under the pseudonym Kurt Weibers in videos and performances and produces tactical media interventions, posing in self‑improvement seminars, staging hoaxes and remixing himself into dialogs. His written and video essays use voice, tone, gesture and humor to materialize aesthetic, scientific and philosophical problems; the virtual identity Kurt Weibers is the central refrain and, inspired by systems/dialogical/relational aesthetics, his investigations sit on the threshold of art and communication.   • Liz Phillips People

    Liz Phillips, a New York-based artist, has been making interactive installations for the past thirty five years; she uses sound as primary material and detects presence and movement with capacitance radio-frequency fields, computers, a K-2000 synthesizer and C++ programs co-designed by Michael Wu to convert voltages into sound and image. Born in New Jersey in 1951, she received a B.A from Bennington College in 1973 and co-founded Parabola Arts Foundation in 1981. Her work has been shown at The Whitney, SFMOMA and Ars Electronica; she collaborated with the Merce Cunningham Dance Company.

  • Alan Sondheim People

    Alan Sondheim (born Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania) is a new-media artist, writer and theorist based in Brooklyn with B.A. and M.A. degrees in English from Brown University. His books include Being on Line: Net Subjectivity, Disorders of the Real and .echo, and his films and videos have screened internationally, including Millennium Film, New York (2008) and Brown's Interrupt Festival (2008). He co-moderates the email lists Cybermind, Cyberculture and Wryting, edited a 2001 American Book Review issue on Codework and was Trace Virtual Writer (1999). He has held residencies at Odyssey/Second Life and West Virginia University (2004, 2006) and conducts NSF-funded research at WVU on codework, avatars and virtual environments.
