Alex Galloway

Alexander R. Galloway is assistant professor of Media Ecology at New York University. Previously Galloway worked for six years as Director of Content and Technology at Rhizome.org. He is a founding member of the software development group RSG whose data surveillance system Carnivore was awarded a Golden Nica at Ars Electronica 2002.

As a scholar, he has written on digital media in popular and academic venues alike. Alex's first book, PROTOCOL, or, How Control Exists After Decentralization, is forthcoming this year from MIT Press.

    Brian Springer is a media artist who investigates how new communications technologies redefine public space and private enterprise; he has exploited social and technological loopholes to extract images, sounds and data from within traditionally closed systems of power. His 1995 documentary Spin uses unpackaged and uncensored satellite news feeds to provide a behind-the-scenes look at the American political process; in recent work he has developed methods for recovering hidden information from digital text files.

  • Steve Seid People

    Steve Seid is the video curator at the Pacific Film Archive in Berkeley, CA; he pursues video preservation and writes on electronic media. He was co-curator of the Ant Farm retrospective currently touring the U.S. and Europe, staged the first live PowerPoint competition, and is co-editing a book with accompanying exhibition on the 50-year history of San Francisco avant-garde media.

    Lev Manovich is Professor in the Visual Arts Department at the University of California, San Diego who teaches new media art and theory and authored The Language of New Media (MIT Press, 2001) and Tekstura (Chicago University Press, 1993). The Language of New Media has received over 40 reviews and been translated into Italian, Korean and Chinese; his awards include a Guggenheim Fellowship (2002–2003) and fellowships from CalArts, UC Santa Barbara and the Zentrum für Literaturforschung, Berlin. Born in Moscow, he moved to New York in 1981, earned an M.A. (NYU, 1988) and a Ph.D. (University of Rochester, 1993); he has worked with computer media since 1984 and since 2006 directs the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute Media.Art.Research. in Linz.
