Angie Eng

Angie Eng is a media artist who works in video, installation and time-based performance. Eng was born in 1969 in San Francisco, California. She was trained as a painter (UC Santa Barbara) following the 2nd generation of abstract expressionist painters.

She moved to New York City in 1993 to discover time based arts. During this time she became involved in the downtown electronic arts scene where she learned to be a live video performer. (SoundLab, Fakeshop, Unity Gain, Pseudo Projects, PS 1 Clocktower Gallery) She collaborated on numerous video performance projects, including The Poool a live video performance group she co-founded and co-directed with Nancy Meli Walker and Benton Bainbridge in 1996-1999.

Her work has been performed and exhibited at the Whitney Museum at Philip Morris, Lincoln Center Video Festival, The Kitchen, New Museum of Contemporary Art, Renssalaer Polytechnic Institute, Eyebeam Art and Technology Center, Roulette Intermedium and Experimental Intermedia. Her videos have been included in digital art festivals in local and international venues in Cuba, France, Greece, Japan, Holland, Germany, Former Yugoslavia and Canada. Her work has been supported by: New Radio and Performing Arts, Eyebeam art and technology center, Alternative Museum, Artists Space, Harvestworks, Art In General, Lower Manhattan Cultural Council, New York State Council on the Arts, Jerome Foundation and Experimental TV Center. She has worked with composers, dancers, theatre, sound and video artists including: Ron Anderson, Rhys Chatham, Vincent Epplay, Yuko Fujiyama, Jon Giles, Andy Grayton, Jason Kao Hwang, Simon Hostettler, Jessica Higgins, Hoppy Kamiyama, Gabriel Latessa, Zach Layton, Okkyung Lee, Jarryd Lowder, Matthew Ostrowski, Jean Jacques Palix, Zeena Parkins, Ludovic Poulet, Liminal Projects, Kyoko Kitamura, David Linton, Thierry Madiot, Geoff Matters, Ikue Mori, Pauline Oliveros, Karine Saporta, Jane Scarpantoni, Peter Scherer, Jim Staley, Satoshi Takeshi, Yumiko Tanaka, Keiko Uenishi, Elisabeth Valletti, Vire Volte Theatre, Nancy Meli Walker and David Weinstein. Recently she received a NYSCA grant to develop a video installation on the socio-political aspects of the water. She is a correspondent for AOA (Artist Organized Art) to support a critical dialogue between artists, art practice and dissemination via public events.

    Nancy Meli Walker is a video artist who improvises with video, paints with light and investigates the union of sound and image; she co-founded the Performed Audio/Video (PAV) groups NNeng and The Poool. Her live video productions include collaborations with David Weinstein, Julie Nichols, Elise Kermani, 77Hz, Barbara Held and Hoppy Kamiyama performed in USA, Barcelona, Madrid and Tokyo.     Nancy Meli Walker, who shifted from fashion design to cast-glass sculpture integrating computer animation and live television, and Benton Bainbridge, an NYU-trained video artist with early experience in Super 8, electronics and live performance, are core members of live video-performance group The Poool alongside Angie Eng; they have performed together in and around New York City since 1993. Bainbridge co-founded the 77Hz group with Philip R. Bonner, Jonathan Giles, Eric Schefter and Michael Schell and held a residency at the Experimental Television Center in 1989; NYU acquired a Fairlight CVI in 1985. The Poool performs about once a year with largely scripted suites, while NNeng (No Eng) performs about monthly with more improvisation, including collaboration with musician Brian Moran.

    Barbara London, Curator of Media Arts at the Museum of Modern Art, founded the Museum's Video Exhibition Program in 1974 and established an international context for video and media art, presenting artists including Laurie Anderson and Bill Viola. She helped found the Video Study Center and assembled over 1,000 independently produced videotapes and related historical and theoretical publications to link electronic arts with traditional art mediums. She took two sabbaticals in Japan to investigate electronic technologies and effects on art and published InterNyet, Stir-fry, Non-Personal Computer Art (Lyon Biennial, Musee d'Art Contemporain, 1995) and Time as Medium, Leonardo Vol. 28, No. 5.

  • Barbara Sykes-Dietz People

    Barbara Sykes is a video artist who holds an M.F.A. from the School of the Art Institute (1979–81) and completed B.F.A. studies at the University of Illinois, Chicago (1974–79); her work spans video, computers and performance. Since 1975 her award-winning tapes have been shown worldwide at major museums, galleries and on broadcast and cable television; she was a featured artist in the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago exhibition Art in Chicago: 1945 to 1995 and has received numerous grants and artists residencies for research and videotape production in India, Japan, China, Australia, Spain and New York.

  • Kathy Brew People

    Kathy Brew works in media and contemporary art; she directed Thundergulch at the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council from 1997 to 2001 and served on New York new media advisory committees. She sits on Eyebeam Atelier's Curatorial Committee and was Exhibition Director for Beta Launch. As a video-maker she collaborated with Roberto Guerra on work shown at the MIT Media Lab exhibition ID/entity Portraits in the 21st Century, which was selected for the 2003 International Festival of Art on Film in Montreal; she has received two Emmys (1999, 2000).

    Annmarie Lanesey is an artist working primarily with video installation and video performance; her work has been shown internationally at galleries, new media festivals and contemporary art venues including the Institute of Contemporary Art in London, Museo de Arte Moderno in Buenos Aries, Argentina, The Center for Contemporary Art in Tel Aviv, Israel, and the 11th International Media Art Biennale in Wroclaw, Poland. She returned to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute as an adjunct faculty member in the Art Department, having received a BS in Electronic Media Art and Communication in 2001 and an MFA in Electronic Art in 2004; her website is www.toxicvideolove.com and she received a Finishing Funds 2007 award from the Experimental Television Center.
