"In 1983, with pilot funding from the New York State Council on the Arts, Anthology Film Archives initiated a video preservation project. Its three objectives are to: 1.) identify and locate independent video-makers in the United States; 2.) borrow and then rerecord video works that are endangered by age, format obsolescence, etc.; 3.) preserve these re-recordings in the proper temperature/humidity conditions.

As of this writing, August 1983, work is underway in all three areas. The next issue of "Video Texts" will present a report on the first year of this project's operation." Video Texts 1983.

  • Saving the Images: A Report from the Looking Back/Looking Forward Symposium Preservation

    On May 31 and June 1 at Downtown Community TV Center in New York, over 50 media arts professionals convened for Looking Back/Looking Forward, a symposium on moving image preservation organized by the Experimental Television Center with IMAP and Bay Area Video Coalition. Sessions addressed physical preservation and remastering (including 1/2" open reel), economics, formats, collection assessment and capturing related histories; participants included representatives from museums, archives, media organizations and artist groups. Outcomes included transcripts for the ETC Video History site, a NEA-funded BAVC DVD (due late 2002), two commissioned papers (Video Preservation: The Basics; Reel to Real) and the Video History Project website (launched 2000) holding nine databases and about 3,500 records.

  • Meeting the Challenges of Video Preservation: A Progress Report on Initiatives within the Media Arts Field by Media Alliance Preservation

    Media Alliance (founded 1979) is a New York State advocacy and service organization for independent media arts that led a 1991 national video survey and symposium with NYSCA, supported Deirdre Boyle's Video Preservation (1993), and applied to NEH for a cooperative catalog of over 8,000 titles across twelve New York institutions. The report documents Playback 1996 organized with BAVC (March 29–30, 1996) at the Museum of Modem Art with Getty and Andy Warhol Foundation funding, NAMID/FileMakerPro cataloging pilots producing over 1,800 records, and BAVC remastering and cleaning services for obsolete formats. Jim Hubbard authored the report and created Anthology Film Archives' first computer catalog under NAMID and a Jerome Foundation grant.

    Compiled list of web references used in the Preservation area; entries comprise archival bodies, professional associations, museums, conservation and media preservation organizations, technical vendors and preservation initiatives. Notable institutions cited include the Library of Congress, American Film Institute, George Eastman House Selznick School of Film Preservation, UCLA Film and Television Archive, National Film Preservation Foundation and WGBH Universal Preservation Format Initiative. The list also cites regional alliances, laboratories and specialty service providers for audiovisual and document conservation.

  • Video Preservation: Securing the Future of the Past Preservation

    Media Alliance launched a video preservation initiative in 1991 and, in partnership with the New York State Council on the Arts, convened a symposium at the Museum of Modern Art on June 14, 1991; over 60 participants from as far as San Francisco and Toronto attended and MoMA sponsored an evening screening organized by Barbara London and Sally Berger. Presenters included Elizabeth Scheines, Leanne Mella, Mark Schubin, David Shulman and Deborah Silverfine; topics covered collection assessment, cataloging (MARC and NAMID), conservation technology, cleaning methods, formats and remastering costs. Media Alliance surveyed over 200 people and solicited funding support from NYSCA, NEA, NAMAC, CCUMC, the Benton Foundation and BAVC; Deirdre Boyle authored the report and Mary Esbjornson served as Executive Director and Project Director of the Video Preservation Initiative.

  • Background and History Preservation

    Experimental Television Center produced this guide and organized the Video History Project, documenting early video art and community television in upstate New York (1968–1980) through oral histories, a website and the Video History: Making Connections conference (Syracuse University, October 1998). The text cites Media Alliance and publications such as Deirdre Boyle's Video Preservation and the Magnetic Media Preservation Sourcebook, and notes IMAP's 1999 formation with New York State Council on the Arts and Rockefeller Foundation support. It outlines archivist functions, videotape deterioration modes and chronology of preservation activities through 2002.
