Arcangel Constantini

Arcangel Constantini explores a wide range of media and alternative resources to fuse his ideas and concepts, both in the context of concrete objects and digital processes which include the exploration of sound and noise performance, as well as the art of hacking. He is obsessed with all types of objects and their re-contextualization in temporal spaces, and reconsiders their aesthetics and connections to questions about our existence. Constantini has received numerous awards, including first prize in the Festival vid at rte 1999, first prize with Atari-noise.com in the Interference Festival (France, 2000), Honorary Mention of bacteria.org in Cinetart (Dresden, Germany 2001), and Bronze prize to the project 123456789px by Machita Museum of Graphic Arts (Tokyo, Japan 1999).

He is a recipient of Jovenes Creadores, FONCA, Rockefeller, and MacArthur fellowships. Constantini is a member of the collectives hell.com, OFFline, igloo and KHORA.     Thessia Machado, Brazil/NY, investigates the physicality of sound and produces installations and video pieces; her work has been exhibited in New York, Philadelphia, Paris, Amsterdam, Dublin and Berlin. She has held residencies at the MacDowell Colony, the Atlantic Center for the Arts, the Irish Museum of Modern Art and the Vermont Studio Center; she received fellowships from The Bronx Museum and the New York Foundation for the Arts and a Finishing Funds 2009 award from the Experimental Television Center and media The foundation.

    Peter d'Agostino is an artist working in video and new media for three decades; his projects have been presented internationally as installations, performances, telecommunications events and broadcast productions. Recent surveys include Interactivity and Intervention, 1978-99 at the Lehman College Art Gallery, New York, and Between Earth & Sky, 1973/2003 at the University of Paris I Partheon-Sorbonne; major group exhibitions include the Whitney Biennial, the Sao Paulo Bienal and the Kwangju Biennial. His work is held by The Museum of Modern Art and distributed by Electronic Arts Intermix; he is a Fulbright Scholar, has received grants from NEA, Japan Foundation, Pew Trusts and others, has held multiple residencies, directs Temple Universitys NewTechLab, and has produced interactive projects and publications on new media.

  • Preserving the Immaterial: The Guggenheim Museum's Variable Media Initiative Preservation

    On March 30–31, 2001 the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York hosted a conference introducing its Variable Media Initiative, led by Senior Curator John Hanhardt and Assistant Curator Jon Ippolito. The Initiative employs a detailed artist questionnaire to specify which aspects of ephemeral-media works must endure and to outline four strategies (reinterpreted, migrated, emulated, stored); sessions presented case studies by Ken Jacobs, Bruce Nauman, Nam June Paik and others. Discussions addressed tape remastering, machine obsolescence, performance fixity versus recording, and emulation for software preservation; JIM HUBBARD, author/contact.

    Preserving the Immaterial: A Conference on variable Media convened at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum on March 30–31, 2001; it focused on the museum's Variable Media Initiative and examined case studies of artworks in ephemeral media, including photo collages, film performances, video installations and Web sites. Artists, curators, conservators and media experts debated strategies for safeguarding works against deterioration, technological obsolescence and cultural amnesia. The program was organized by John G. Hanhardt, Senior Curator, and Jon Ippolito, Assistant Curator, Film and Media Arts Program; studied artists included Jan Dibbets, Felix Gonzalez-Torres, Ken Jacobs, Robert Morris, Mark Napier, Nam June Paik and Meg Webster.
