Abstract

Organized by the Albright-Knox Art Gallery "to provide an informal viewing situation in which producers of art related videotapes from the western New York area can show their tapes and view those of others". Panelists: Lyn Blumenthal (Co-Director Video Data Bank of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago); Kate Horsfield (Co-Director Video Data Bank of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago); Simone Forti (Dancer and video artist); Hermine Freed (Video artist and documentor); Gerald O'Grady (Director of the Center for Media Study and Educational Communications Center, SUNY/Buffalo); William Wegman (Video artist). Continuous screening of over 60 videotapes in the Gallery auditorium. Catalog included in conference packet contains list of tapes screened. Works produced at the Experimental Television Center include those by Peer Bode, Meryl Blackman, Jane Wright, Ed Mellnik. "Art V represented the first video symposium organized by the Albright-Knox Art Gallery... Art V is co-sponsored by the Albright-Knox Art Gallery and Hallwalls through a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, a Federal agency, with additional funding from the Committee for the Visual Arts." Statement by Linda Cathcart, Curator at Albright-Knox. Packet also contains Portable Channel Videotape Catalog: 28 videotapes produced as part of an experimental video series in cooperation with WXXI-TV in Rochester. Tapes dated 1972-1976.

    Video on the Air (Department of Video, School of the Art Institute of Chicago; 1986) is a series of visiting artists, producers and curators held in conjunction with the Graduate Video Seminar taught by Beth Berolzheimer. Participants included Lois Bianchi (WNET); Rii Kanzaki (video artist; electronic image processing); Doug Hall (video artist; recent work Storm and Stress links the spectacle of nature with that of technology); Kathy Huffman (curator/producer, CAT Fund, Boston); and Juan Downey (whose videotape series The Thinking Eye investigates Western Art History and culture through autobiography and montage).

    New Work in Abstract Video Imagery is an anthology of videotapes produced 1973–1977 and organized for the Everson Museum of Art, Syracuse in 1977; it documents experiments with television, magnets, videosynthesizers, lasers and computers and includes works by Nam June Paik (magnet experiments; Paik/Abe videosynthesizer), Shuya Abe, Aldo Tambellini (Black Spiral, 1968), Peter Van Riper, Mary Lucier (Fire Writing), John Cage (Suite 212), Ron Hays and many Chicago-based practitioners. Production centers cited include the New Television Laboratory at WGBH, the Sandin Image Processor at the Art Institute of Chicago, the Experimental Television Center (Binghamton) and Bell Labs; the New York State Council on the Arts provided support. The exhibition was organized by Richard Simmons as an artists' cooperative with revenues divided equally among participants.
