Artists' Use of Telecommunications Conference - Live International Video and Audio Link February 16, 1980 "The conference brings together internationally known artists working with telecommunications to discuss and explore ideas pertaining to satellites and slow-scan video. The conference will be presented in "telecommunication space" with participants located in San Francisco, New York, Toronto, Vancouver, Vienna and Tokyo. Participants include, among others, Bob Adrian, Bill Bartlett, Liza Bear, Douglas Davis, Sharon Grace, Carl Loeffler, David Ross, Aldo Tambellini, Norman White and Gene Youngblood. Organized by La Mamelle Inc. and San Francisco Museum of Modern Art".

The on-line part of the "Artists' Use of Telecommunications Conference" was organised by Bill Bartlett for "La Mamelle" (an artist-run space in San Francisco) and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMMA). The "Conference" was also the first global use of Slow-Scan TV (video images transmitted over the telephone) by artists.

Artists' Use of Telecommunications Conference convened February 16, 1980 as a live international video and audio link to discuss satellites and slow-scan video; it was organized by La Mamelle Inc. and San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. The on-line component was organised by Bill Bartlett for La Mamelle and SFMMA, and the event was the first global use of Slow-Scan TV by artists.     Video History: Making Connections took place October 16–18, 1998 at Syracuse University alongside the Common Ground Conference, sponsored by the New York State Alliance for Arts Education; it paired 1970s media makers with contemporary new-media artists and drew over 250 attendees. Programming included a reception at the Everson, a keynote by David Ross (Director, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art), the Ausprobieren performance, panels on video history and practice, Extended Play screenings by more than 20 organizations and an Open Screening; a Resource Room exhibited early analog and digital tools and continuous viewing of Pioneers of Electronic Art curated by Woody and Steina Vasulka (Ars Electronica, 1992).

  • Video History: Making Connections - Panels

    Panels on Saturday, October 17, 1998, under Video History: Making Connections covered early digital photography, writing about video, tool development and restoration, distribution and teaching video history. The Pioneers of Digital Photography session related to an Open Space Gallery exhibition in Allentown, PA, in summer 1998 co-sponsored with Light Work. Presenters included Mary Ross; Paul Ryan; Jim Lindner (President, VidiPax), who traced magnetic materials from wire recording to the present; and representatives of DCTV, Paper Tiger TV and KAKO discussing activist video.

  • Reach Out and Touch Someone: The Romance of Interactivity Bibliography

    The essay traces the genealogy of interactivity in avant-garde video from nineteenth-century shifts in communal practices and the 1876 introduction of the telephone to contemporary machine-mediated intimacy; it argues that technological developments shortened distances and fostered new models of social connection. It situates the genesis of video art in the late 1960s following Sony's 1968 1/2-inch equipment, surveys artists and movements (including Nam June Paik, Douglas Davis, Alan Kaprow) and venues such as WGBH, WNET, and KQED, and discusses cable public-access, satellite projects, and interactive videodisk experiments. Specific projects cited include Douglas Davis's 1970s broadcasts, Kit Galloway and Sherrie Rabinowitz's Hole in Space (1980), Nam June Paik's Good Morning Mr. Orwell (1984), and the Lister Hill Center's 1971 New Hampshire-Vermont Interactive Network.
