The Association of Independent Video and Filmmakers organized a National Task Force on Public Broadcasting and on September 7-9, 1977 presented testimony to The Subcommittee on Communications, House Interstate and Foreign Commerce Committee.

AIVF was a rallying point for issues of independent makers on public television.

    Independent video and film producers increased political organizing to gain programming and funding access; AIVF lobbied the Corporation for Public Broadcasting during its reorganization after the Carnegie Commission report and advocated a clear definition of independents and Program Fund set-asides. A dispute at WNET-Channel 13 over four peer-panel-selected films produced the Coalition To Make Public Television Public, meetings with president Jay Iselin on Feb. 11 and a protest at Lincoln Center on Feb. 24, and scrutiny of station finances. Independent feature filmmakers formed the Independent Feature Project (director Joy Pereths) after a New York Film Festival market (Sept. 1979); national organizing includes a Minnewaska meeting (April 1979) leading to a NAMAC conference in Boulder (May 29–31).

  • Association of Video and Filmmakers: The Fab Formation (of a Media Arts Organization) Groups

    The Association of Independent Video and Filmmakers (AIVF) formed in the mid-1970s around organizers including John Culkin and founding board member and first president Ed Lynch; early activity comprised screenings, workshops and advocacy, notably a late-1974 Fifth Avenue Cinema series and a national campaign that defeated an AFI federal funding bill. AIVF established ICAP and in 1975 incorporated the Foundation for Independent Video and Film (FIVF) to dispense grants; it administered CETA funds beginning in 1977 and a NEA-funded Short Film Showcase, grew from 99 Prince Street to 625 Broadway, and published The Independent.

  • Independent Television Makers and Public Communications Policy Chronology

    John Reilly organized Independent Television Makers and Public Communications Policy, a Seminar Conference to Promote Telecommunications Diversity held at the Rockefeller Foundation on June 6-9, 1979, supported by The Rockefeller Foundation with collaboration from Howard Klein, Director, Arts Program, and Herbert Dordick of the University of Southern California (then visiting MIT). Reilly presented The Independents, Media Arts Centers and Public Television; Alan Jacobs, Executive Director of AIVF, contributed The Independent Mandate; and Nick DeMartino, independent producer and editor of Televisions and consultant, Carnegie Commission on the Future of Public Broadcasting, addressed The Case for a Center for Independent Television.
