Astral Projections: A Polyfusion of Media, catalog of exhibition produced by Howard Gutstadt and Mollie Hughes of Survival Arts Media and published by Visual Studies Workshop. Catalog undated. The live video and music performance was created live on 2 evenings at the Strasenburgh Planetarium in Rochester. Audience of 1500. Survival Arts Media worked with Central Maine Power in a live collaborative performance utilizing video and audio synthesis and music by Central Maine Power. There were several concerts in New York City, as well as work with the Paik/Abe Video Synthesizer at the Experimental Television Center through the Artist in Residence Program; concerts were also presented at Synapse.

Astral Projections was a live projected multimedia performance of music and media by artists, using live cameras, feedback and the Rutt/Etra video synthesizer performed by Bill Etra. Images were mixed and colorized using an Eric Siegel colorizer, and projected live as well as recorded. The catalog contains a complete description of the video equipment setup.

  • Public Access Celebration: July 6,7,8, 1972 Report on Public Access in New York Groups

    Survival Arts Media was formed in 1972 in Jamestown, NY, founded by Howie Gutstadt; members included Gail Edwards, Howard Gutstadt, Molly Hughes, Ben Levine, Danny Bucciano and Richard Malone. The collective produced community education and health programming, multimedia shows and regional videotapes; it participated in the Public Access Celebration in New York City (July 6–8, 1972) and released a report in January 1973. Howard Gutstadt documented the Jamestown studio development (1977), describing equipment such as Sony 8400 portapaks, Super 8, a Kodak VPX transfer system and an Electronic Associates of Berkeley Videolab; the group co-released the Artists and Craftsmen Anthology with the Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Library System, funded in part by the New York State Council on the Arts.

  • Early Video History at Visual Studies Workshop Groups

    Under director Nathan Lyons, Visual Studies Workshop established a media center in 1973 with production facilities, workshops and exhibitions; early video activity increased in 1974 with student workshops and an equipment purchase supported by a 1973–74 New York State Council on the Arts grant. VSW hosted events including Polyfusion (Strasenburgh Planetarium, Sept 20–21, 1974), ran a 1974–75 visiting-artist program that included Nam June Paik and Bill Viola, and collaborated with WXXI and Portable Channel on broadcasts and exchanges. The Research Center holds extensive media-center files, and the videotape collection—augmented by Portable Channel (1989) and Ithaca Video Festival deposits (1993)—contains over 4,000 tapes.
