Benjamin Gerdes
Benjamin Gerdes is an artist and activist based in Brooklyn, NY. He received his BA from Brown University's Program in Modern Culture and Media and his MFA from the Integrated Media Arts program at Hunter College (City University of New York), and was a studio art resident in the Whitney Museum of American Art Independent Study Program. He frequently works in collaboration with other artists, activists, theorists, and musicians, including as a member of the 16 Beaver Group.
His individual and collaborative work focuses on the affective and social consequences of economic and state regimes, utilizing historical research and reenactment, dialogue, and participatory or aleatory formalizations. He is the recipient of numerous residencies, including the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council (LMCC) Woolworth Building Workspace Residency and the LMCC Swing Space Residency, and recent grants from the Jerome Foundation and NYSCA/The Experimental Television Center. He currently teaches as Visiting Artist in the Department of Cinema, State University of New York at Binghamton, and as a faculty member in video at The Cooper Union School of Art.
