Black Box Video Shorts, October 11- November 8, 2000 at the College Art Gallery, College of New Jersey. Exhibition of early video art, including installations, live performances and tapes, and a large selection of ephemera from the Experimental TV Center's collection of early posters, programs and other materials. Curated by Anita Allyn.

Also included works by Experiments in Art and Technology, works by Douglas Davis, Wolfgang Staehle, David Blair, Willoughby Sharpe, Amos Poe, Jack Waters, and Penny Arcade. Performances by Walter Wright and Marc Bisson.

Black Box Video Shorts took place October 11–November 8, 2000 at the College Art Gallery, College of New Jersey; the exhibition presented early video art in installations, live performances and tapes and displayed ephemera from the Experimental TV Center's collection of early posters, programs and other materials.   • About the Video History Project

    The Experimental Television Center’s Video History Project, begun in 1994, is an ongoing research initiative documenting video art and community television as they evolved in rural and urban New York State and spread across the US; initiatives include research, conferences and a website. The Project aims to identify, locate and make accessible tapes, artists’ instruments, writings and ephemera from early portable-media practices introduced in the late 1960s, and to cultivate research and public programming that situates independent media within broader cultural contexts. Thousands of tapes are held across New York State in libraries, museums, media arts centers, artists’ spaces, universities, video collectives and private collections; the Project invites public contribution and collaboration to assist preservation and access.

  • Experimental Television Center 1971-present

    Experimental Television Center (Owego, New York) is a residency and production organization active since 1971; it hosted annual residency programs, supported over 1,100 artists, and added digital tools such as a third Amiga and the Toaster (1990–91), a Miro non-linear board, and a G4 Mac with nonlinear editing (1996–2000). Works by residents were screened at major institutions including MoMA, the Whitney, and the New Museum; the Center administered Presentation, Finishing and Media Arts Technical Assistance funds and ran the Video History Project, which produced a website (launched 2000) and a Video History conference (Syracuse University, Oct 16–18, 1998). Funding came from NYSCA, NEA, Andy Warhol Foundation, NYFA and others.

    The Electronic Gallery exhibition at the University Art Gallery, Binghamton, was curated by Maureen Turim. It presented a tape exhibition of works from the Experimental TV Center by Ralph Hocking and Sherry Miller; Hank Rudolph; Henry Linhart; Shalom Gorewitz; Peer Bode; Meryl Blackman; Reynold Weidenaar; Barbara Buckner; Neil Zusman and Julie Harrison; and Gary Hill; an accompanying essay was by Maureen Turim and Donna Cesan.
