    Aldo Tambellini (born Syracuse, New York, 1930) trained at Scuola D'Arte Augusto Passaglia and Syracuse University (B.F.A., 1954) and earned an M.F.A. in sculpture at Notre Dame (1959); he moved to New York City in 1959 and founded Group Center, the Gate Theatre and, with Otto Piene, the Black Gate. He was an early pioneer of alternative video and won the International Grand Prix at the Oberhausen Film Festival (1969) for Black TV, now in MoMA, and organized national and international artist television broadcasts. He was a Fellow at MIT Center for Advanced Visual Studies (1976–84), formed the Communicationsphere group and led numerous telecommunication and slow-scan satellite/video projects, including picturephone and international slow-scan events; his work appeared in exhibitions at MoMA, Howard Wise Gallery, documenta 6 and Bienale '83.

    On 12 July, 1962 the narrator performed at MoMA during Aldo Tamellini's Award of the Golden Screw; Aldo then opened The Center in a Lower East Side loft and organized a festival at St. Mark's-in-the-Bouwery Church. In October 1963 St Mark's hosted an independent sculpture show of forty U.S. sculptors; in 1964 Aldo began projection work and the narrator served as assistant projectionist and coordinator for intermedia events using slides, film and light equipment. The narrator opened The Gate Theatre to screen underground films and, with Aldo and Otto Piene, founded the Black Gate Electromedia Theater above the auditorium; legal conflicts included a three-month battle over flag burning and threats related to the underground film Brothel.

    Aldo Tambellini (born 1930, Syracuse, New York) moved to New York in 1959 and worked in sculpture, painting, 16 mm film and video, founding Electromedia and the Gate and Black Gate Theatres. He produced artist broadcasts including Black TV (1968), Medium is the Medium (WGBH, 1969) and Inauguration '81, and developed the Communicationsphere for interactive telecommunications using slow-scan television and two-way cable TV with Sarah Dickinson. He was a 1977 Fellow at MIT's Center for Advanced Visual Studies and received project grants from the M.l.T Council for the Arts (1979, 1981), the New York State Council on the Arts (1973), and the Oberhausen International Grand Prix (1969); he exhibited at MoMA and the Everson Museum.
