Bob Harris

BA Colgate University MFA University of California, San Diego Artistic Director of the NY State Education Department's Summer School of the Media Arts, an intensive media program for high school students. Previously taught at Ithaca College, UCSD, and Palomar College. Prior to teaching, played a significant role in the foundation and establishment of the Video Department at Anthology Film Archives.

Served as Video Curator at Anthology and at PS #1, in Queens, NY from 1979 to 1986. Also curated numerous special programs nationally and internationally. Founded, at Anthology Film Archives the first video preservation project in the nation.

Film and video maker whose work seeks to extend the parameters of the non-fiction genre while exploring text/image relations. Recent work COYOTE, a hybrid, film/video evocation of trickster mythology, won awards at the New Video Festival and Black Maria Film/Video Festival. Other works have shown nationally and internationally at Whitney Museum of American Art; Museum of American Art of the PA Academy of the Fine Arts, Museo Laboratorio Di Arte Contemporanea, Rome, Italy; Exit Art; Anthology Film Archives; and Palais de Beux Arts, Brussels.

Bob Harris holds a BA from Colgate University and an MFA from the University of California, San Diego; he served as Artistic Director of the NY State Education Department's Summer School of the Media Arts and taught at Ithaca College, UCSD, and Palomar College. He helped found the Video Department at Anthology Film Archives, was Video Curator at Anthology and PS #1 in Queens, NY from 1979 to 1986, and founded at Anthology the first video preservation project in the nation; as a film and video maker his work, including COYOTE, has won festival awards and been shown at institutions such as the Whitney Museum of American Art, Museo Laboratorio di Arte Contemporanea in Rome, Exit Art, Anthology Film Archives, and Palais de Beux Arts in Brussels.

    John G. Hanhardt is Senior curator of film and media arts at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum; he holds a B.A. from the University of Rochester and an M.A. from New York University. He was film coordinator at the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis (1972–74) and curator and head of the film and video department at the Whitney Museum of American Art (1974–96). He curated exhibitions and film and video series at the Whitney and Guggenheim, edited Video Culture: A Critical Investigation (1986) and received the Peter Norton Family Foundation Curator's Grant (1993).

    Anthology Film Archives initiated a video preservation project in 1983 with pilot funding from the New York State Council on the Arts; the project aimed to identify and locate independent video-makers in the United States, borrow and rerecord video works endangered by age or format obsolescence, and preserve the re-recordings under specified temperature/humidity conditions. As of August 1983 work was underway in all three areas; the next issue of Video Texts will present a report on the project's first year.
