Brian Kane

Brian Kane was born in Worcester, MA, USA, and received his BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design in 1987. He has worked extensively in the commercial computer graphics field for the entertainment, gaming, and internet industries, and his artwork has been shown internationally. As Creative Director for Gamelogic, Inc, from 2001 through 2005, Brian led the creative team for the first legal, licensed, online casino gaming product to be launched in the U.S.

From 1996 through 1999, Brian designed the Gamesville.com brand, a highly successful massively multiplayer online gaming website, which was acquired by Lycos in 1999. In the 1980's, Brian was a founding member of the groundbreaking multimedia group Emergency Broadcast Network (EBN), in which he pioneered the art and technology of video sampling. EBN's work has influenced a generation of media artists, and they are credited with inventing the video mashup.

He, along with Gardner Post and Josh Pearson worked in residence at the Experimental Television Center. In 1992, Brian invented VuJak, the world's first video sampler. From 1995 through 2001, Brian collaborated with the acclaimed art collective Amorphic Robot Works, creating robotic software for large scale musical performances which have been exhibited in museums worldwide. He was also general partner and Creative Director for RadioValve.com, one of the world's first internet radio stations.

From 1988 through 1996, Brian created many milestones in the development of commercial holography, including the first commercial computer generated hologram in 1988, and the first full-parallax stereographic hologram in 1996. He currently lives in Cambridge, MA, USA, where he teaches design at Emerson College and is a consultant for the online and broadcast industry. https://www.briankane.net

    Dave Jones formed Designlab in 1985 (now Dave Jones Design) to manufacture analog and digital image-processing machines for artists; he developed analog and early digital video-processing tools in the mid-1970s at the Experimental Television Center. He formed Silver Bullet Video in the early 1970s to market portable batteries and later worked as technician at the Experimental Television Center and as a freelance video engineer and digital consultant. Designlab built custom control-voltage-enabled systems for artists including Ralph Hocking and Gary Hill and returned to bespoke video-art tools after 1991.

  • Experimental Television Center 1971-present

    Experimental Television Center (Owego, New York) is a residency and production organization active since 1971; it hosted annual residency programs, supported over 1,100 artists, and added digital tools such as a third Amiga and the Toaster (1990–91), a Miro non-linear board, and a G4 Mac with nonlinear editing (1996–2000). Works by residents were screened at major institutions including MoMA, the Whitney, and the New Museum; the Center administered Presentation, Finishing and Media Arts Technical Assistance funds and ran the Video History Project, which produced a website (launched 2000) and a Video History conference (Syracuse University, Oct 16–18, 1998). Funding came from NYSCA, NEA, Andy Warhol Foundation, NYFA and others.

    Eric Siegel (b.1944), interviewed in 1970, built his first TV camera at fifteen and won New York City Science Fair awards for home-made closed-circuit television projects; he worked in closed-circuit television and in 1966 in the Educational TV Department at the University of London. In 1968 he produced the videotape program PSYCHEDELEVISION for the Channel One closed-circuit theatre, designed special-effects components for TELEVANILLA at the Martinique Theatre, exhibited at the Howard Wise Gallery and Brandeis University (VISION AND TELEVISION, 1970), repaired a two-inch Ampex helical-scan recorder, developed a colorizer and planned a video synthesizer while discussing technology, distribution and television's social role.

    Jon Satrom discovered video while living in Bismarck, ND, a conservative community of around 60,000; he and a friend found the local community access station in the basement of the public library and he became deeply involved. He moved to Chicago and, while attending the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, witnessed the 'digital video revolution' as video shifted from magnetic tape to digital buffers and grew dissatisfied with one-sided editing programs, prompting him to integrate code writing into his art.   • Bill Gwin People

    William Gwin was a painter who served as the first artist-in-residence at the National Center for Experiments in Television (NCET) at KQED in San Francisco; he also worked at the Television Laboratory of WNET, Channel 13, in New York. In the summer of 1973 he was again artist-in-residence at NCET; his video work was broadcast by KQED and exhibited in museum and theatrical environments in Paris, Mexico City, and Tokyo.

    Ralph Hocking outlines his move from pottery and sculpture to photography, video and computer-based image work; he acquired a Paik/Abe synthesizer in 1972 and, with Sherleen Miller, produced multi-camera pieces (1971–1978) using mixing, reversal, rate switching and voltage control. With David Jones he developed a twenty-six-command program to manipulate frames and produce 256×256 black-and-white dot-matrix prints. He taught video art at SUNY Binghamton for thirteen years and founded and directed the Experimental Television Center Ltd. in Owego; entry appears in the Generic Real-time Interactive Digital catalog, Arnot Art Museum, July 12–September 28, 1986, curated by Peter Chamberlain.
