Carol Parkinson

Carol Parkinson is Director of Harvestworks. Founded in 1977 to cultivate artistic talent using electronic technologies, Harvestworks' mission is to encourage the creation and expand the dissemination of digital media artwork.

From its central SOHO location and through its Internet presence Harvestworks provides accessible and coordinated digital media production, education, information and content distribution services to a diverse creative community that includes electronic music composers, interactive media designers, film and video makers, digital tool developers and computer programmers. By bringing together innovative practitioners from all branches of the digital arts, Harvestworks provides a vital context and catalyst for creativity in the digital arts.

    Mary Magsamen and Stephan Hillerbrand are multi-media artists, curators and new media activists who have collaborated for five years and been exhibited nationally and internationally. Hillerbrand has received National Endowment for the Arts and Art Matters grants; Magsamen has received the Longwood Cyber Residency; both hold Masters degrees from Cranbrook Academy of Art and were awarded the 2003 Lower Manhattan Cultural Centers Artist-in-Residence Workspace Program at the Woolworth Building for their collaborative project Das Angstbauen. Their artist statement cites fantasy, role-playing and self-portraiture and a stream-of-consciousness method using digital image acquisition and manipulation to create video work.

    Survival Arts Media was formed in 1972 in Jamestown, NY, founded by Howie Gutstadt; members included Gail Edwards, Howard Gutstadt, Molly Hughes, Ben Levine, Danny Bucciano and Richard Malone. The collective produced community education and health programming, multimedia shows and regional videotapes; it participated in the Public Access Celebration in New York City (July 6–8, 1972) and released a report in January 1973. Howard Gutstadt documented the Jamestown studio development (1977), describing equipment such as Sony 8400 portapaks, Super 8, a Kodak VPX transfer system and an Electronic Associates of Berkeley Videolab; the group co-released the Artists and Craftsmen Anthology with the Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Library System, funded in part by the New York State Council on the Arts.

  • Cary A. Peppermint People

    Cary Peppermint is a conceptual artist and assistant professor of art at Colgate University; he works with digital technologies and performance art and distributes network performances via the website Restlessculture.net. His practice investigates cultural effects of an interconnected, information-based global culture and setting information free through accessible, searchable, database-driven new media; his net.art includes early real-time interactive performances realized via CU-SEEME and early internet browsers. He curated the international exhibitions Technorganic and Wilderness Information Network, received awards including a Franklin Furnace Performance Grant, an Experimental Television Center Workshop Grant, and NYSCA's Decentralization Grant, and his work is held by the Walker Art Center, Rhizome.org at the New Museum for Contemporary Art, The Whitney Museum of American Art, and Computer Fine Arts.

  • Lea Rokow People

    Lea Rokow is founding director of Gigantic ArtSpace and is active in curating, publishing and programming; she works in film, video and interactive multimedia and spent the last decade living and traveling in over 50 developing countries shooting film and still photography, from which she produced ethnographic projects shown internationally. She was previously director of Harmonic Ranch, a new media studio in TriBeCa, and director of media programs at the Center for Peace and Human Security; she has taught video at Pratt Institute in Manhattan, performed with Emergency Broadcast Network, and produced new media for Simon and Schuster Interactive. She holds a Master's degree in film and digital media; www.learekow.com.

  • Carol Stakenas People

    Carol Stakenas is Deputy Director and Curator of Creative Time, New York City's multidisciplinary public arts presenter; she curated and produced public art at the Brooklyn Bridge Anchorage, Times Square and Grand Central Terminal. She created and co-chaired the international seminar Blur 02 Power at Play in Digital Art and Culture and spearheads Creative Time's CyberWide initiative. She served as web advisor to School's OUT: The Naming Project, curated Lo-Fi Baroque at Thread Waxing Space and serves on the boards of the National Association of Artists Organizations (NAAO) and Conjunction Arts.
