Caspar Stracke

Caspar Stracke is a German visual artist, based in New York City. He works in video, film, and new media. His video and installation works have been shown in institutions such as MoMa and The Whitney NY, ZKM Karlsruhe, ICC Japan, Yerba Buena SF, Rena Sofia Madrid, among many others. In addition he has exhibited in int'l film and media art festivals throughout North and South America, Europe and East Asia.

He is a member of THE THING, a New York-based net art and media art nexus. Caspar is also the founder of Lossless Video, an on-line list for video art criticism. As a curator Caspar worked for institutions such as Eighth Floor Gallery, Knitting Factory, THE THING and CITYZOOMS Hannover/Barcelona. Since 2005 he is the co-director of video_dumbo, a festival for contemporary video art in NYC, co-presented by the Dumbo Arts Center.

    Deborah Stratman was Adjunct Assistant Professor of Film, Video, and New Media (1998) at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago; she holds a BFA (1990) from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and an MFA in Film/Video (1995) from the California Institute of the Arts.   • Courtney Rile People

    Courtney Rile is an artist, curator and arts coordinator based in Syracuse, NY; her video art has been shown internationally and locally, including the first Syracuse International Film and Video Festival. In 2005 she curated the moving-images program Videohm at an upscale lounge and bar in Syracuse, presenting nearly 300 hours of international experimental film and video and VJ work; she also coordinated the exhibition Clement Greenberg In Syracuse: Then & Now at ThINC's Company Gallery that year. She is Gallery Coordinator at Delavan Art Gallery and holds an A.A. in TV/Radio/Film from Montgomery County Community College, PA, and a B.F.A. in Video Art from Syracuse University, NY.

  • Christian Marclay People

    Christian Marclay is a New York based visual artist and composer born in California and raised in Geneva; he studied sculpture at the Massachusetts College of Art in Boston and at Cooper Union in New York. As a performer and sound artist he has experimented, composed and performed with phonograph records and turntables since 1979 to create his theater of found sound; he is also described as a dadaist DJ and filmmaker.   • Video Tapes Kolnischer Kunstverein Chronology

    Video Tapes was an exhibition at Kolnischer Kunstverein; the presentation included an introduction by Wulf Herzogenrath. The exhibition featured video works by a large group of artists named in the text, including Vito Acconci, Eleanor Antin, John Baldessari, Lynda Benglis, Joan Jonas, Allan Kaprow, Nam June Paik, Bill Viola and Wolf Vostell, among others.

  • The Whitney Museum and the Shaping of Video Art: An Interview with John Hanhardt Interview

    John Hanhardt is curator of film and video at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York City; he integrated video into the Whitney’s exhibition program and curated the Nam June Paik retrospective in 1982. Trained at NYU with a MoMA internship, he became Whitney department head in 1974 after serving at the Walker Art Center; he organized Projected Video (1975) and Re-Vision (1979) and placed video in Biennials from 1973. He secured Rockefeller Foundation funding to equip the theater, is writing Expanded Form in Film and Video (due spring 1983), and pursued touring and distribution via the AFA.
