Chris Burden (born 1946) studied at Pomona College and the University of California, Irvine from 1969 to 1971 and taught at the University of California, Los Angeles from 1978 to 2005; he gained notice in the early 1970s for controversial performances about personal danger, notably Shoot (1971) at F Space, Santa Ana, when an assistant shot him in the left arm; other works date 1971–1979. From 1975 he reduced performances and made installations addressing science and politics, including B-Car (1975), DIECIMILA (1977), The Speed of Light Machine (1983) and C.B.T.V. (1977).
