Harald Bode surveys the history of electronic sound modification from 1896 to the present, tracing electromechanical precursors such as Thaddeus Cahill’s Telharmonium and instruments of the electronic era including the Trautonium, Hammond Novachord, RCA synthesizer and Moog modular systems; he documents technologies and effects including filters, envelope shaping, vocoder/voder, ring modulation, delay lines, tape techniques, flanging, phasing, frequency shifters, harmonizers and reverberation. Final Project Report to the National Endowment of the Arts concerning control structures for digital computers used in art-making; the report contrasts analog and digital approaches and proposes rich non-linguistic inputs and the simulation of analog systems within digital computing. The project team recorded roughly eight years of preliminary use of slide potentiometers, dials, joysticks and data tablets, diagnosed limited human-computer degrees of freedom, and set goals to create dynamic, flexible, user-programmable multidimensional controls with constructive feedback that are easy to construct, documentable for moderate electronic skills and affordable. The work produced four device categories: pressure-sensitive keyboards, sensing clothing, force-feedback dials and time-based computer variables.
