Media Study/Buffalo, in collaboration with WNED-TV, Channel 17 and the Center for Media Study at the State University of New York at Buffalo, had held its first Conference on Contemporary Directions in the Public Affairs Documentary in February, 1979 and has announced the second annual event for May 12-15, 1980.

    Media Study/Buffalo was a Western New York center for photography, film, video, sound and electronic arts; it ran workshops, equipment access, residencies, screenings and exhibitions with grants from NYSCA and the NEA. In 1977 it acquired the 100,000-foot Mars Hotel in downtown Buffalo and rented Super 8mm and 16mm cameras and a Rutt/Etra video synthesizer while producing local PBS programming. By April 1985 heating and plumbing failures rendered the building unusable and Media Study effectively closed; limited equipment access continued through individuals and the Squeaky Wheel collective.

  • Educational Communication Centers and the Television Arts Chronology

    Conference Educational Communication Centers and the Television Arts convened at SUNY Albany on November 21-22, 1974; coordinated by Gerald O'Grandy of the Center for Media Study at SUNY Buffalo. The stated purpose was to present developments in the video arts and related technology and to outline ways communication centers can serve developing media artists on their campuses and stimulate media activities in the arts and humanities. Presenters included O'Grady, Steina Vasulka (Center for Media Study, U of Buffalo), Tom DeWitt, Paul Kaufman (NCET at KQED), Fred Barzyk (Television Workshop at WGBH), David Loxton (TV Lab at WNET), Ed Emshwiller, Joel Chadabe and representatives from the Experimental Television Center and NYS Council on the Arts.

    Chronology and program notes documenting activities around the Center for Media Study (CMS) at the State University of New York at Buffalo and the nonprofit Media Study/Buffalo, with citations to Pamela Susan Hawkins (1998), Marguerite W. Knowles (1996) and John Minkowsky (1977). Dr. Gerald O'Grady founded and directed CMS in 1972 and led initiatives including an Oral History of the Independent American Cinema and multiple conferences and summer institutes; CMS offered undergraduate and graduate coursework and degrees in media-making, history/theory and social effects of media, maintained extensive film and video facilities, and recorded over five hundred hours of filmmaker interviews. The record lists programs, dates, speakers, faculty, facilities, and funding sources from the 1970s through the 1990s.

  • Media Alliance Chronology

    Meeting to formalize Media Alliance was held November 2–3, 1979 at Media Study/Buffalo; representatives from organizations including Donnell Film Library, Experimental Intermedia Foundation, Hallwalls, IMAC and The Kitchen attended; By Laws and a statement of purpose were drafted and distributed. The annual membership meeting was set for January 25, 1980 in New York City; agenda items included voting on the Board of Directors, discussion of funding for Media Alliance and a report from the Telecommunications Committee.

  • Gerald O'Grady People

    Gerald O'Grady, Ph.D., founded Media Study (Buffalo) and initiated the Center for Media Study at SUNY Buffalo, directing its Educational Communications Center that served 128 departments. He came to the University at Buffalo in 1967 as a medieval specialist, established the Center in 1972, and coordinated a November 21–22, 1974 conference at SUNY Albany. He was Visiting Scholar in Harvard's Department of Afro‑American Studies and Fellow of the W.E.B. DuBois Institute, produced PBS documentaries supported by Ford, Rockefeller, Markle, MacArthur, NEA and NEH, and since 1979 has edited over 30 film-retrospective catalogues.
