Connie Coleman and Alan Powell

Connie Coleman and Alan Powell have collaborated in the electronic arts since the late 1970s.

Their work encompasses single channel videotapes, sculptural multi-channel electronic installations, digital photography and electronic printmaking.

Coleman holds undergraduate and graduate degrees from the Rhode Island School of Design and is a Professor at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia where she teaches Computer Animation.

Powell holds a BFA from Rhode Island School of Design and an MFA from Rutgers University. He was a founding member of the Electron Movers in Providence, RI, Rhode Island's first Media Arts Center. He is an Associate Professor in the Film/Media Arts Department at Temple University.

Coleman and Powell's work has been shown at The Kitchen, The Alternative Museum, and The Museum of the Moving Image in New York; the Philadelphia Museum of Art; The Long Beach Museum in California; the Musee d'Arte Moderne in Paris; and has been broadcast on Swiss and Danish television, the Learning Channel, and PBS.

  • The Electron Movers: Research in the Electronic Arts, Inc Groups

    Electron Movers, Research in the Electronic Arts, Inc., was a Providence, Rhode Island video-artist collective established in 1974 and active through 1979; core members were Laurie McDonald, Robert and Dorothy Jungels, Alan Powell, and Dennis Hlynsky, with Larry Heyl, Philip Palombo, and Ed Tannenbaum joining later. The group experimented with electronically generated and processed images and multi-channel installations, used equipment such as Larry Templeton’s video quantizer, and spent six weeks at KQED’s National Center for Experiments in Television in San Francisco. Members received NEA and AFI/NEA fellowships, exhibited at venues including The Kitchen, the Everson Museum, and Artpark, and held ties to RISD and the Experimental TV Center.

  • Collaboration in Electronic Image Processing Groups

    Electron Movers was a Providence video collective formed at RISD in the early 1970s by Robert and Dorothy Jungels, Dennis Hlynsky, Laurie McDonald and the author; RISD hosted workshops by Brice Howard and the Vasulkas and had acquired basic video gear in 1970. Incorporated in 1974 as Electron Movers, Research in the Electronic Arts Inc., they occupied a 2,500 sq ft loft, received an RI State Arts Council fellowship (Hlynsky) and an NEA fellowship (author), and pooled tools including a six-level George Brown mixer, Templeton colorizers, a Buchla synthesizer, editing gear, cameras and monitors. The group produced the interactive Video Maze (1974–76), staged dance/video installations and community workshops, and dissolved around 1978 with members continuing in documentary, production and institutional media roles.

  • Laurie McDonald People

    Laurie McDonald studied at the Rhode Island School of Design in the early 1970s and held internships at WNET's Experimental Television Lab and the National Center for Experiments in Television; she co‑founded Electron Movers/Research in the Electronic Arts, Inc., a video co‑op active 1974–1979. In early 1980 she relocated to Houston to direct video projects for the Southwest Alternate Media Project; she received an NEA fellowship and four AFI/NEA awards and her video work has been exhibited internationally. She holds a BFA from RISD and an MA from the University of Houston.
