With the assistance of the Daniel Langlois Foundation in 2004, as well as by the New York State Council on the Arts, we are focused presently on early video/media instruments - those tools designed individually or by artists and technologists working collaboratively, as well as innovative commercial devices. This research links associated texts, documentation, technical data, maker biographies and interviews, and tapes produced on these systems. Content derives from our tool and paper archives.

We are electronically photographing the devices, and in some cases, creating moving image records of the functioning of the tool. We are scanning associated texts, documentation, and ephemera related to events which include posters, exhibition program notes, exhibition catalogs; and audio and video interviews. The data would be published on the existing History Project Website.

    The Experimental Television Center's 2004-2005 report documents a residency program serving 56 artists from eight states and Israel, Canada, Bulgaria and Norway; the Center provided a hybrid image-processing system, intensive instruction, and the 10th Annual International Summer Workshop. The Center administered Finishing Funds (16 projects in 2005) and Presentation Funds, convened Technical Assistance meetings statewide, and expanded the Video History Project (begun 1994). Daniel Langlois Foundation and the National Television and Video Preservation Foundation supported development and preservation work, including remastering ten hours of early videotape and producing documentation DVDs.

  • Issues in Capturing Related Histories Panel Preservation

    Panel with Joel Chadabe (Electronic Music Foundation), Alain Depocas (Daniel Langlois Foundation) and Woody Vasulka addressed preservation of media art performances, installations and digital works, focusing on digitization, emulation and documentation. They gave examples: Chadabe cited Luigi Nono and John Cage’s Bird Cage; Vasulka described scanning and OCR of about thirty thousand pages (Czech Republic contract ~$1,900, outputs RTF and TIF/PDF); Depocas summarized the Daniel Langlois documentation centre (open October 2000), its bilingual relational database, recent acquisitions and a Guggenheim partnership on the Variable Media questionnaire and emulation case studies.

  • ETC History 2006 - 2007

    The Experimental Television Center documented 2006–2007 activities including a Residency Program that hosted 49 artists from nine states and several countries and operates a hybrid imaging system (quad G5, two G4s, Doepfer modules, Max/MSP, Jitter, Pluggo, DVD tools); residency support and project funding involved mediaThe foundation, NYS Council on the Arts and the NEA. Programs noted include Finishing Funds (17 projects), a Grants Program (one million dollars awarded since 1989) and Presentation Funds (assisted 59 organizations in 22 counties); technical assistance distributed about $57,000 to 37 organizations. The Center also runs the Video History Project and Web (12 databases, ~6000 records), produced a CD of Early Media Instruments (2003), remastered early tapes with the National Television and Video Preservation Foundation, digitized interviews, and is completing a multi-set DVD anthology.

    Conceived and directed by Sherry Miller Hocking, the Video History Project has operated since 1994 as a collaborative effort; acknowledgements include Ralph Hocking and William Joseph Hocking. Kathy High and Mona Jimenez collaborated with Hocking on the book The Emergence of Video Processing Tools: Television Becoming Unglued (Intellect Press, 2014); Matthew Schlanger redesigned the site in Drupal and migrated the databases while David Jones assembled the original vhp web database. Listed funders and partners include the Andy Warhol Foundation, Daniel Langlois Foundation, New York State Council on the Arts, New York Foundation for the Arts, Everson Museum and Visual Studies Workshop; Visual Studies Workshop Summer Institute participants worked 1992–1998 on A Natural History of Video Art.
