Dara Meyers-Kingsley

Dara Meyers-Kingsley is a film and video art curator specializing in collections management, preservation and exhibitions. Ms. Meyers-Kingsley was a founding member of Independent Media Arts Preservation, Inc. (IMAP), the organization for which she presently serves as Director. Previous positions include an affiliation with VidiPax, the magnetic media restoration company where she provided archival management consultation services to a variety of clients in the museum, performing and visual arts, and broadcast industries.

Staff positions include Director of the Film and Video Collections at The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts (1993-1996), where she oversaw the preservation, restoration, management and marketing of the films and videos of Andy Warhol and film and video program curator at The Brooklyn Museum (1987-1993), where she organized 20 exhibitions of international media. A video art historian, Ms. Meyers-Kingsley is also a guest curator specializing in work from the 1970s. Her touring retrospective of the video and audio work of Adrian Piper MEDI(t)Ations traveled to five cities over the course of two years (1999-2001).

Prior recent exhibitions include SURVEYING TIME: THE VIDEO ART OF HERMINE FREED 1973-1998, CHANNEL MIX: FILMS, VIDEOS AND RELATED WORK by Keith Sonnier 1968-1977, and REEL WORK: ARTISTS' FILM AND VIDEO OF THE 1970s, the inaugural film and video exhibition for the Museum of Contemporary Art, Miami. Ms. Meyers-Kingsley has been a granting panelist for the New York State Council on the Arts, the NYC Department of Cultural Affairs, and the Women's Film Preservation Fund of New York Women in Film and Television. She has been on the Selection Committees for the Video Festival of the New York Film Festival, the national Council on Foundations and "P.O.V."

  • Video Preservation: Securing the Future of the Past Preservation

    Media Alliance launched a video preservation initiative in 1991 and, in partnership with the New York State Council on the Arts, convened a symposium at the Museum of Modern Art on June 14, 1991; over 60 participants from as far as San Francisco and Toronto attended and MoMA sponsored an evening screening organized by Barbara London and Sally Berger. Presenters included Elizabeth Scheines, Leanne Mella, Mark Schubin, David Shulman and Deborah Silverfine; topics covered collection assessment, cataloging (MARC and NAMID), conservation technology, cleaning methods, formats and remastering costs. Media Alliance surveyed over 200 people and solicited funding support from NYSCA, NEA, NAMAC, CCUMC, the Benton Foundation and BAVC; Deirdre Boyle authored the report and Mary Esbjornson served as Executive Director and Project Director of the Video Preservation Initiative.

  • Mona Jimenez People

    Mona Jimenez is an artist and media arts consultant who served as Executive Director of Media Alliance (1993–96) and Director of Independent Media Arts Preservation (1996–2001); she was Researcher-in-Residence at the Daniel Langlois Foundation in 2003 and is Assistant Professor and Moving Image Preservation Specialist in Cinema Studies at NYU. Her work includes co-editing Magnetic Media Preservation Sourcebook, coordinating TechArcheology for Bay Area Video Coalition, and organizing conferences with the Experimental Television Center (Video History: Making Connections, 1998; Looking Back/Looking Forward, 2002). She received an Artist Fellowship in Computer Arts from the New York Foundation for the Arts in 1998 and has consulted for IMAP, ETV, Rhizome.org, WNET/Thirteen and other media organizations.

  • Michele Thursz People

    Michele Thursz is an independent curator and director of Post Media Network; in 1999 she co-founded and directed Moving Image Gallery, NYC. Recent projects include a collaboration in a production with the electronic orphanage and artist Miltos Manetas and a guest curator role at the New Museum's Media Z Lounge organizing Cin-o-matic- Memory and the Cinematic Perception, which examined the impact of new technologies on the cinematic experience. She is organizing a group show entitled In Medias Res: Technology's Impact on Artistic Practice at Exit Art, NYC; she has consulted for http://www.Turbulence.org, a net art initiative, and for bitforms gallery, NYC, on marketing and distribution of software related art.

    With support from the New York Foundation for the Arts, IMAP conducts a needs-assessment for a web-based cataloging tutorial and union catalog of independent media collections, under the direction of Jim Hubbard

  • Cataloging Preservation

    Describes efforts to establish compatible cataloging for media arts collections; Independent Media Arts Preservation (IMAP) distributes a MARC-compatible FileMaker Pro template developed by Jim Hubbard with involvement from NAMID staff including Henry Mattoon and former director Margaret Byrne. The template has been adopted by the Kitchen, the Experimental TV Center, Visual Studies Workshop, Hallwalls Contemporary Arts Center, Paper Tiger Television and Downtown Community Television Center; IMAP conducted a planning and feasibility study for an online tutorial supported by a Technology Planning Grant from the New York Foundation for the Arts and the New York State Council on the Arts. NAMID at the American Film Institute promotes a MARC-compatible union database and houses over 200,000 records.
