Deirdre Boyle

Deirdre Boyle is the author of Subject to Change: Guerrilla Television Revisited (Oxford, 1997), a history of '70s video collectives, Video Classics: A Guide to Video Art and Documentary Tape (Oryx, 1986), and Video Preservation: Ensuring the Future of the Past (Media Alliance, 1993). She is the senior core faculty member in the Graduate Media Studies Program at The New School for Social Research in New York City.

She is the recipient of numerous awards, including a Guggenheim Fellowship, Fulbright Fellowship at Moscow State University, Asian Cultural Council research grant, an ACE award for best documentary series on cable TV in 1988, and most recently, the New School University's Distinguished Teaching Award. She has organized exhibitions of video art and documentary works for museums, libraries, television systems, festivals, arts centers, and universities in the United States, Canada, Finland, Belgium, Spain, Italy, Russia, India, Hong Kong, Japan, and Korea. She is a frequent contributor to The Independent Film and Video Monthly and Wide Angle, and has written nearly 150 essays for a variety of popular and scholarly media journals.

  • Video History: Making Connections - Seminars

    Video Rewind: A Seminar on Early Video History (October 16, 1998) was a day-long seminar introducing curators, critics, librarians, archivists, funders, artists and students to independent video in America (1965–1980); it offered screenings, lectures and discussions on video art, documentary tapes and topics such as portapaks, closed-circuit video, collectives and cable TV. Seminar leader Deirdre Boyle (The New School) presented alongside Barbara London (Curator of Video, MoMA), Paul Ryan (McLuhan fellow) and Parry Teasdale (Videofreex). A full-day Video Preservation session, co-sponsored and organized by Media Alliance and Mona Jimenez, gathered representatives to report on preservation initiatives and funding trends.

  • Preservation

    Deirdre Boyle, historian and educator, testified at a 1996 hearing for the Report on the Study of American Television and Video, arguing that omission of video pioneers would render histories of American television and recent American social history incomplete and distorted.     Experimental Television Center produced this guide and organized the Video History Project, documenting early video art and community television in upstate New York (1968–1980) through oral histories, a website and the Video History: Making Connections conference (Syracuse University, October 1998). The text cites Media Alliance and publications such as Deirdre Boyle's Video Preservation and the Magnetic Media Preservation Sourcebook, and notes IMAP's 1999 formation with New York State Council on the Arts and Rockefeller Foundation support. It outlines archivist functions, videotape deterioration modes and chronology of preservation activities through 2002.
