Diane Bertolo

Diane Bertolo is an artist who most often works in digital media. Her CD-ROM Probing into Science was shown in several exhibitions including "TechnoGrrrrls" at the Pacific Film Archives at the Berkeley Museum and "Art as Signal" at the Krannert Museum in Urbana-Champaign. Her work has been shown in numerous media festivals including the "Mostra de Video Independent" in Barcelona, Spain and the "LA Freewaves Festival" at MOCA in Los Angeles.

    Diane Teramana is a video artist whose work combines editing, special effects and performance; her video Bare Canvas, Blank Mind was praised by New Art Examiner and ACE Magazine for its poetic, dreamlike imagery. She presented a one-woman show at The Knitting Factory, NYC in 1993 (curator Stephen Vitiello), screened and served as a panelist for Internal Clatter at the Contemporary Arts Center in 1995, and completed six residencies at the Experimental Television Center in Owego, NY. She has received numerous fellowships and grants including a major media fellowship (a ten thousand dollar award for video, 1999) and support from the Ohio Arts Council and Cincinnati Arts Allocation; her works are distributed by Art Metropole and Facets Video.

  • Jeanne Finley People

    Jeanne C. Finley is an artist and filmmaker whose experimental and documentary work has been exhibited at major institutions including the Guggenheim, MoMA (San Francisco), the Whitney and the Georges Pompidou Center. Her films screened at festivals such as the San Francisco International and Toronto International, and she received a Guggenheim (1994) and a Fulbright to Yugoslavia (1989). Since 1988 she has collaborated with John Muse on experimental documentaries and multi-channel installations; the duo received a Creative Capital grant (2000) and produced works including The Trial of Harmony and Invention (2000).

  • Diane Nerwen People

    Diane Nerwen is a video artist and media arts educator whose works have screened internationally, including the Berlin Film Festival, the New York Video Festival, the Guggenheim Museum, NY and the Tate Modern, London; her videos are distributed by Video Data Bank, Chicago and Vtape, Toronto. Her practice has been supported by grants from the New York State Council on the Arts, New York Foundation for the Arts and Creative Capital Foundation, and she received a DAAD Artist in Residence Fellowship in Berlin in 2001; she was born in Montreal and lives in Brooklyn, NY.

  • Pioneers of Digital Photography Bibliography

    Mary Ross curated Pioneers of Digital Photography at Open Space Gallery, Allentown, Pennsylvania in 1998 and lectured at the Video History conference at Syracuse University, Oct. 16–18, 1998; the exhibition was supported by the Pennsylvania Council for the Arts and private foundations. The essay surveys 1960s–1980s artists who combined photographic processes with electronic and digital media, assembling 60 works by 18 artists. It documents technologies such as photocopiers, Kirilian photograms, Portapak recorders, video synthesizers and early computers at Experimental Television Center, citing practitioners Nam June Paik and Sonia Landy Sheridan.

  • Camille Utterback People

    Camille Utterback (San Francisco) is a pioneering artist and programmer in interactive video installation; her work has been exhibited internationally and is held in collections including The La Caixa Foundation (Barcelona). She received a Transmediale International Media Art Festival Award (2005) and a Rockefeller Foundation New Media Fellowship (2002). She holds a BA from Williams College and a Masters degree from the Interactive Telecommunications Program at New York University Tisch School of the Arts, and has taught in the MFA Design of Technology at Parsons School of Design and in the Interactive Telecommunication Program at New York University.

  • Marita Sturken People

    Marita Sturken is Associate Professor at the Annenberg School for Communication, University of Southern California, and author of Tangled Memories (California, 1997), Thelma & Louise (British Film Institute, 2000), Practices of Looking (with Lisa Cartwright, Oxford, 2001), and co-editor of Technological Visions (Temple, 2004). She holds a PhD from the History of Consciousness program at the University of California, Santa Cruz, and has published in journals including Representations, Public Culture, History and Theory, and Afterimage. She has written extensively about video art and the emergence of video, including catalogues for the Museum of Modern Art and Electronic Arts Intermix, and co-curated with Robert Riley the exhibition Machine Media: Steina and Woody Vasulka at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art in 1996.
