Dorothea Braemer

As Media Center Manager and Program Director at Scribe Video Center, Braemer was actively involved in providing access to video training and production facilities to historically underserved communities. Scribe is known for its mission as a media arts organization that promotes video as both an artistic medium and a tool for progressive change. Braemer headed up Scribe's "Community Visions" program, which trains community groups to create videos about their constituency or concern.

A Co-Director of the Termite TV Collective and active member since 1994, Braemer has produced numerous half-hour television programs for this award-winning video collective covering a broad range of cultural, social, and political themes. Termite TV creates multi-faceted and stylistically innovative programs about issues not regularly covered in mainstream media. Their nationally cablecast series has won the Golden Apple at the National Education Film & Video Festival, the Best Innovative Series Award from the Alliance for Community Media, the Grand Prize from the US Super 8 Film and Video Festival, and has twice been the recipient of a Director's Citation from the Black Maria Film Festival.

Braemer's personal media work has been broadcast nationally on PBS, and exhibited internationally at venues such as the Museum of Modern Art, the Museum of Television and Radio, the Athens Film & Video Festival, the Budapest Film Festival and Artists in Wonderland in Baruth, Germany. She has been the recipient of grants and awards from the Sprague Foundation, the Bread and Roses Community Fund, the Pennsylvania Council of the Arts, the Puffin Foundation and the Samuel Fels Foundation, amongst others. She received an artist's residency from the Werkleitz Gesellschaft fur Kunst und Medien in Saxony-Anhalt.

Braemer has taught film analysis and video production in the Communications Department at Villanova University. She holds an MFA from Temple University's Department of Film Media Arts, and a BA in Russian Literature & Art from University of Massachusetts in Boston, MA. She is Director of Squeaky Wheel in Buffalo.

Contributors examine technological and institutional change, including Benjamin Buchloh on developments since the mid-1960s; Katherine Dieckmann on Electra at the Mus6e d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris (1984); Lucinda Furlong on image-processed video and Nam June Paik and the marketing of portable video equipment by SONY/Japan; and the rise of media centers funded by state and federal agencies and university programs. Hornbacher is a visual artist, curator and artist-in-residence at The Experimental Television Center, Owego, New York, since 1976.

  • Carolyn Tennant People

    Carolyn Tennant holds an MFA from SUNY at Buffalo and a BA (1997) from Hampshire College; additional studies include Squeaky Wheel (2003), Visual Studies Workshop (2002), Mount Holyoke (1993–95), Cornell (1993–94) and the Salt Center for Documentary Field Studies (1994). Since 6/2002 she has been affiliated with the Experimental Television Center (Newark Valley, NY) and from 1/2002 served as Research Assistant for Dr. Zimmermann at Ithaca College, performing copy editing and administrative work. Her Chicago employment included office-manager and receptionist roles; her productions include Fenceline, The Last Hand Loader, Rulloff's Brain, Mazamorreo (recipient of a $10,000 Ill. Humanities Council grant), and the multi-media You Don't Feed Me.

  • Signals in Syracuse - Video History: Making Connections conference Bibliography

    Video History: Making Connections examined three decades of independent video since the late 1960s and opened with Video Rewind, organized by Deirdre Boyle; panels included Paul Ryan, Barbara London (MOMA video curator) and Parry Teasdale, with screenings such as Proto Media Primer (1970) and Calligrams (1970). A concurrent Video Preservation meeting, involving Mona Jimenez and referencing MOMA’s 1991 preservation meeting, addressed cataloging, funding and technical support; David Ross delivered a keynote at Henriks Chapel on Net Art and video’s institutional absorption. Pamela Hawkins organized a Resource Room displaying early analog and digital recording and playback equipment, processors and period publications, and panels treated writing and teaching video history.

    Keynote address at the 1998 NAMAC National Media Arts Conference, dedicated to Leslie Schwartz Burgevin (1958–1998) of the Johnson Museum of Art, Ithaca, NY, and acknowledging NAMAC board members Helen De Michiel, Charlie Humphrey and Karen Khan. The speaker diagnoses plural states of emergency affecting media arts—privatization, arts defunding, transnational consolidation (Time Warner, Bertelsmann, Disney) and technological change—and urges reclaiming independent media’s oppositional heritage and public space through new access, distribution and exhibition practices involving camcorders, CD‑ROMs, web sites and editing systems such as Avid and Media 100. The talk cites 1981 and 1989, Erik Barnouw and Paper Tiger TV and calls for collective, contested zones of practice.
