Association for Independent Film and Videomakers published Plugging into the Video Circuit in The Independent (June 1983); Bay Area Video Coalition published Video Distributors in Video Networks (Oct 1983) and produced the Video Networks National Video Distributor Directory, an annual beginning about 1986 with extensive distributor listings and profiles. National Video Resources' NVR Reports ran multiple pieces on home-video marketing, education and digital distribution (Issues 1–17, 1990–1995); Videography ran distributor profiles including Castelli/Sonnabend Tape and Film (Jan 1977) and Museum of Modern Art (Apr 1983, Aug 1984).

Museums package traveling video shows and charge artist fees; distributors and media centers lease or sell tapes to institutions. Betamax/VHS, cable and broadcast are discussed as emerging markets; notable projects include the Whitney's Introduction to Video for the AFA catalog, Everson's Video Anthology, Global Village's Giving Birth and Synapse's planned paid distribution beginning January 1979.

  • Meeting the Challenges of Video Preservation: A Progress Report on Initiatives within the Media Arts Field by Media Alliance Preservation

    Media Alliance (founded 1979) is a New York State advocacy and service organization for independent media arts that led a 1991 national video survey and symposium with NYSCA, supported Deirdre Boyle's Video Preservation (1993), and applied to NEH for a cooperative catalog of over 8,000 titles across twelve New York institutions. The report documents Playback 1996 organized with BAVC (March 29–30, 1996) at the Museum of Modem Art with Getty and Andy Warhol Foundation funding, NAMID/FileMakerPro cataloging pilots producing over 1,800 records, and BAVC remastering and cleaning services for obsolete formats. Jim Hubbard authored the report and created Anthology Film Archives' first computer catalog under NAMID and a Jerome Foundation grant.

    Beyond Video: The Media Alliance Directory I traces the development of video art from the Sony portapak's U.S. arrival circa 1965 through the 1980s; it records early practitioners, guerrilla collectives and nonprofit centers including Young Filmakers/Video Arts (1968) and Global Village (1969). By 1972 at least nine New York organizations supported subsidized production, training and post-production, and academic workshops expanded in the 1970s. AIVF (1974) and ATN (1976) organized around cable and publishing; Anthology Film Archives received tape‑preservation funding in 1983 to transfer late‑1960s–early‑1970s tapes to 3/4" cassettes, and the 1980s brought broader exhibition venues.

    Sherry Miller Hocking's February 2002 introduction surveys efforts to preserve independent videotape and electronic media from the 1960s to 2002; it documents institutions and initiatives including the NEA and AFI, F/TAAC/AMIA, MoMA's 1991 symposium, Playback 1996, BAVC's remastering facility (1995), IMAP (1999), TechArcheology (2000), Preserving the Immaterial (2001) and the Looking Back/Looking Forward symposium (May 31–June 1, 2002). It identifies technical and organizational problems—videotape deterioration, obsolete equipment, dispersed collections and lack of a union catalog—and lists recommended actions such as compatible cataloging, remastering research and facilities, public and educational programs, and broader funding and coalitions.
