Defines electronic image processing as working with video signal parameters (frequency, amplitude, phase) and electronic tools—oscillators, synthesizers, computers, monitors and printers—to manipulate imagery using keying, superimposition, digitization, preprogramming and real-time techniques. Technical overview of video synthesizers (image processors) defining them as integrated assemblages of video signal sources, processors, and controllers; examples cited include cameras, decks, character generators, oscillators, keyers, VCAs, mixers, colorizers, sequencers, SEGs and frame buffers. The text classifies three signal types (video, sync, control) and lists system elements (sync, routing, output amplifier, monitoring, control); it explains termination and genlock use, describes monitoring equipment (waveform monitor, vectorscope, color and B/W monitors) and outlines the function of colorizers.

Dan Sandin describes the Image Processor (I-P) as a patch programmable general purpose analog computer for real-time video image processing which he designed and built; it accepts television camera, film chain and videotape inputs, routes images through modular processors to monitors or tape and can accept external biological and environmental sensor signals. Jim Weisman describes the Paik/Abe Video Synthesizer as a colorizing device accepting 14 inputs and mixing up to seven for monitor display or videotape. Philip Lee Morton states Video E/S is authorized under the Illinois Retailers' Occupation Tax Act to sell tangible personal property at retail, that the registration covers the Use Tax Act and related service tax acts, cites #188-411-5, and defines E/S as a compound of two words beginning with E and S.
