Emily Breer

Emily Breer creates live-action/animation films which have been screened in festivals and museums in the U.S. and internationally. THE PHONY TRILOGY (POOL BOY, CADDY, THE HORROR) is a real-time video-meets-digital-animation trilogy of shorts featuring Joe Gibbons as the phony who recounts his influence among such rock legends as Iggy Pop and Brian Wilson. Breer's last film, SUPERHERO, shows continuously at the Museum of the Moving Image in New York.

SUPERHERO and THE GENIUS, a feature she co-directed with Gibbons, were included in the 1995 Whitney Biennial. Most recently, Breer and Gibbons have collaborated on a series of one-minute videos, starring Gibbons, shot on Hi-8, and animated and edited on the computer. Joe Gibbons' dry humor comes across in obsessive monologues that scrape the bottom of a monomaniacal mind, spilling forth fantasies of power, destruction, and death.

    Buffalo, New York-based multi-media artist Megan Michalak will complete KINOMIC Redistribution System (kinetic+economic), created with Stephanie Rothenberg; described as an educational, interactive game parodying the World Bank and WTO, it will be presented as an installation in August 2009 at Gallery Titanik in Turku, Finland. Her work has been presented at Smack Mellon Gallery (NYC), The Bronx Museum of the Arts, The Silver Lake Film Festival (Los Angeles), the SF Cinemateque and Dance Theater Workshop.   • Bernard Roddy People

    Bernie Roddy is a philosopher and filmmaker who taught college philosophy and media courses and earned a PhD in philosophy from the University of Rochester (1995) and an MFA in Media Study from the University at Buffalo (2003). He produced 16 mm animated and dramatic films—including Truth (1998), Relativism (1999), Fluxus Cartoon (2000), Time and Object (2001) and the MFA thesis Dire Mastery (2003)—and made video works The Gift and The Great Confinement (2004). His work screened at festivals such as Ann Arbor, Cinematexas and the Black Maria, and he received a 2003 Experimental Television Center Finishing Fund.

  • Jim Trainor People

    Jim Trainor was Assistant Professor of Film, Video and New Media (2000) at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and holds a BA (1983) from Columbia University, NY; his films include The Fetishist, The Bats, The Moschops and The Magic Kingdom. His films screened at venues and festivals including the Whitney Biennial, Museum of Modern Art (NY), Sundance, Rotterdam (Netherlands), Thessaloniki (Greece) and Golden Horse Festival (Taiwan); awards include San Francisco International, Black Maria, NY Underground, Cinematexas, Big Muddy and Ann Arbor film festivals.

  • Penny Lane and Brian Frye People

    Penny Lane is an independent filmmaker living in western Massachusetts; her collaborative and solo experimental, narrative and documentary videos have screened at AFI FEST, Int'l Film Festival Rotterdam, San Francisco and Seattle Int'l Film Festivals, Women in the Director's Chair, Santa Fe Art Institute, MOMA, and DUMBO Art Under the Bridge. She earned an MFA in Integrated Electronic Arts at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and a BA in American Culture at Vassar College; from 2003–5 she was a core producer of the Hudson-Mohawk Independent Media Center and worked with youth at Children's Media Project and The Ark, Inc. She is a visiting assistant professor of video at Hampshire College and received a 2007 Finishing Funds award from the Experimental Television Center.
