History 1993-94

Artists in Residence include Alan Berliner, Sandi DuBowski, Sara Hornbacher and Robert Natowitz, Tatiana Louriero, Andrea Mancuso and Peter D'Auria. Works were screened at Film/Video Arts, in the program Iterations: The New Image at the International Center of Photography, the Venice Biennale and the Osnabruck Media Art Festival. Work was also presented at Montage 93 in Rochester. The Center is a member of the Preservation Working Group of Media Alliance, and the National Moving Image Database project of the American Film Institute. Finishing Funds 1994 recipients selected by Anne Fergerson and Mona Jimenez include David Blair, Vivek Renjen Bald, Larry Brose, Pamela Susan Hawkins, Michael Schell and 77 Hz, Branda Miller and Stephen Vitiello. Organizations receiving exhibition support include the Afrikan Poetry Theatre, Experimental Intermedia Foundation, the Alternative Museum, Rome Art and Community Center, the Matrilineage Symposium at Syracuse University and Videoteca del Sur.

History 1994-95

Artists in Residence include Veena Cabreros-Sud, Lisa DiLillo, Genevieve Hayes, Barbara Hammer, Dave Ryan, Debra Robinson, and Sui Kang Zhao. Exhibition sites include Exit Art, Colgate University, @ Cafe, the New Museum, Hallwalls, the Black Maria Festival, the 5th International Symposium of Electronic Art in Helsinki, the 8th Annual NY Lesbian and Gay Experimental Festival, the New York Video Festival and the Copenhagen Film Festival. Exhibition support was provided to Bard College, City Lore, Electronic Arts Intermix, Gallery 53, Ithaca College, and the Polish Community Center. Finishing Funds recipients selected by Bob Harris and Steina Vasulka include Tom DeWitt, Carl Geiger and Amy Hufnagel, Jody Lafond, Rohesia Hamilton Metcalfe, Kristin Tripp, and Cathy Weis. The State Arts Council supported creative projects by Shalom Gorewitz, Alex Hahn, Jeffrey Lerer; Susan Muska received support from the Astraea National Lesbian Action Foundation.

    1995–97 the Center's Residency Program hosted artists including Mara Alper, Kjell Bjorgeengen, Michael Betancourt and Kristin Lucas; works were shown at Momenta Art, the Whitney Museum, the Knitting Factory, LACMA and MFA Boston and at festivals including the 6th International Symposium on Electronic Art (Montreal) and the NY Video Festival. The Center expanded its digital system to include a Windows-based computer system and a Miro non-linear board; Finishing Funds awarded over $95,000 to nearly 200 artists while Presentation Funds supported 54 organizations across 20 counties, reaching nearly 40,000 people and leveraging over $300,000.

  • ETC History 1991-92

    Artists in residence 1991–92 included Irit Batsry, Shalom Gorewitz, Pamela Jennings and Ann-Sargent Wooster; works by Irit Batsry, David Blair and Nancy Buchanan were screened at the Museum of Modern Art and exhibited at the Wexner Center and the Brooklyn Museum. The Center placed works on cable and broadcast programs The 90s and Independent Focus; David Blair won Prize for Wax at Montbeliard and the Center began a computerized catalog of equipment, videotapes and prints inspired by Ars Electronica in Linz. NYSCA supported Dan Reeves; Philip Mallory Jones received support.

  • ETC History 2001 - 2002

    The Experimental Television Center ran a 2001–2002 Residency Program providing studio access, an image processing system and individualized instruction to 50 artists from 11 states, Canada and Switzerland; the Center has assisted over 1,100 artists since 1971. Residents produced tapes exhibited at festivals and venues across the US and Europe; the Center hosted the 7th Annual International Student Residency and convened Looking Back/Looking Forward on May 31–June 1, 2002, a symposium on moving-image preservation attended by over 60 professionals. The Video History Project (launched 1994; expanded since 2000) maintains about 3,500 web records and over 1,000 bibliography entries and commissions preservation research; projects received support from NYSCA, NEA, Rockefeller Foundation, Creative Capital, Jerome Foundation, Radcliffe Institute and others.

  • ETC History 2005 - 2006

    The Experimental Television Center's Residency Program provided self-directed creative time and hybrid image-processing facilities; since 1971 it assisted over 1,400 artists and in 2005–06 hosted 53 artists from eight states, Israel and Germany, with equipment including a quad G5, two G4s, Doepfer modules and interactive software such as Max/MSP and Jitter. The Center managed Finishing and Presentation Funds, ran the International Summer Workshop, and maintained the Video History Project (begun 1994) with conferences, a 2003 CD and a 2004–05 remastering project; it received an Institute for Electronic Arts residency (2005–06) to document artists' instruments.

  • ETC History 1997 - 1999

    From 1997 to 1999 the Experimental Television Center hosted residency programs and international and student residencies, supporting a total of 48 resident artists from the US, Canada, Finland and Switzerland and awarding Finishing Funds (18 awards in 1998; 17 projects supported) and Presentation Funds to dozens of organizations across New York State. Works were screened at festivals and institutions including AFI, MIX, MoMA, the Whitney and international venues, with distribution via Electronic Arts Intermix, Filmmakers Coop and others. The Center led the Video History Project and organized the Video History: Making Connections conference (Oct 16–18, 1998) at Syracuse University; partners and funders included Alfred University Institute for Electronic Arts, The Andy Warhol Foundation, NYFA, NYSCA and the Rockefeller Foundation.
