    Introduction to the Women's Video Festival situates the festival as a response to women's underrepresentation in media and to social changes from the late 1960s; it describes the arrival of portable half-inch videotape (Sony portapak, 1967) that lowered costs and enabled immediate playback. The Kitchen (begun 1971) and Steina Vasulka's 1972 call for work led to a six-evening open-entry show organized with Shridhar Bapat and Laura Kassos. The festival received New York State Council on the Arts funding via Electronic Arts Intermix in 1973, moved production to the Women's Interart Center in 1974/75 with NEA support, has used juried selection since 1974/75, and solicits work across the U.S. and Canada.

  • The Electronic Kitchen Chronology

    The Electronic Kitchen in New York City was founded by Steina and Woody Vasulka as a screening and performance center for the electronic arts at the Mercer Arts Center; its original location was the Broadway Central Hotel, which housed the Mercer Arts Center. In 1971 it established a first annual video festival; in 1973 it moved to Broome Street and was first funded through EAI. It was subsequently known as The Kitchen Center for Video, Music and Dance; video directors included Shridhar Bapat, Dimitri Devyatkin, Carlota Schoolman, RoseLee Goldberg, Jackie Kain, Greg Miller, Tom Bowes and Amy Taubin.

    Steina Vasulka describes the New York video scene of the late 1960s and 1970s, explaining how artists pooled expensive equipment and formed collectives to meet NYSCA funding rules; she names early groups including People's Video Theater, Freex, Raindance, Global Village and the Perception group. She recounts founding the Kitchen with Woody Vasulka and Andy Mannik as a venue for video, dance and music; programming initiatives such as the Women's Video Festival; residencies at the TV Lab; the tape Participation (material from 1969–1970) with a 1/2" reel-to-reel master; and the move to Buffalo in spring 1973.
