Summary

Graham Collins completed a B.Mus at Carleton University, Ottawa (1988–1993), concentrating in theory/composition and electronic music. He composed film and video soundtracks between 1998 and 2001, including POV and Jesus Christ Vampire Hunter; he performed with The Institution (music director), Slo' Tom and the Horseshit Heroes, Kathleen Edwards and as pongthrob. He taught synthesis (1996–2000), managed Song Bird Music's Keyboard Dept./Internet sales, received a 1999 Mediafix grant for Liquid Light, and held residencies at the Experimental Television Center in March 1999 and April 2000 with Tim Dallett.

    Bill Viola (born 1951, Flushing, New York) is a video artist who since the 1970s has used broadcast-quality electronic technology to produce videotapes and video-and-sound installations exploring layers of human consciousness; he trained at Syracuse University (College of Visual and Performing Arts, 1973) and worked at Synapse and WNET/Thirteen's Artists' Television Laboratory. He has collaborated with Kira Perov and engineers such as John Godfrey, lived and worked in Japan (including Sony's Atsugi facility), settled in southern California in 1981, and created works including Four Songs (1976), Chott el-Djerid (1979), Ancient of Days (1979–81), Hatsu Yume (1981), Reasons for Knocking (1982), Room for St. John of the Cross (1983), I Do Not Know What It Is I Am Like (1986), and Passage (1987).

    Gene Youngblood wrote Expanded Cinema (E.P. Dutton, 1970) and co‑taught a 1970 video history course at California Institute of the Arts with Nam June Paik. He has taught video history and theory and lectured at more than 400 colleges and universities. Since 1988 he has been Professor of Moving Image Art at the College of Santa Fe, where a 15‑week, six‑hour‑weekly course surveys 35 years of independent video in six categories. He also taught avant‑garde film and Media and Democracy and is writing a textbook while completing two books, The Challenge to Create on the Same Scale As We Can Destroy and The Broadcast and Its Discontents.

  • Matt Underwood People

    Matt Underwood holds a BFA from the School of Art and Design at Alfred University; he works across print, video, sound, installation and performance. He collaborated with Richard Kostelanetz, creating a soundtrack for one of Kostelanetz's video poems; his videowork was included in the 2003 International Digital Arts Exhibition at Shangai University, and he has served as an instructor with the International Summer Workshop.
