Gretchen Skogerson

Gretchen Skogerson is a video and installation artist. Before becoming an artist she studied contemporary art history and cinema studies. One of her current projects, The American Disaster Series, a group of experimental videos and sculptures, focuses on the re-telling of contemporary disasters.

Her work has been shown at a variety of venues including The Whitney Biennial, The New York Film Festival, The International Film Festival of Rotterdam and The Mattress Factory in Pittsburgh, PA. She is an associate professor in the Film/Video Department at Massachusetts College of Art. www.gretchenskogerson.com.

  • Gretchen Bender People

    Gretchen Bender was a film and video artist associated with young 1980s artists who used appropriated photographic sources, including Jack Goldstein, Cindy Sherman, Robert Longo and Richard Prince; she produced socially conscious mixed-media works often using multiple video monitors and film screens with loud music scores. Her first New York gallery show was at Nature Mode in the East Village in 1983; she later showed at Metro Pictures and designed the credits for the TV show America's Most Wanted and directed music videos for Babes in Toyland. She designed sets for Bill T. Jones and Molissa Fenley; in 1991 the Everson Museum of Art in Syracuse mounted a traveling midcareer retrospective of her work. She died in New York in 2005 at age 53.

    John Hanhardt is curator of film and video at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York City; he integrated video into the Whitney’s exhibition program and curated the Nam June Paik retrospective in 1982. Trained at NYU with a MoMA internship, he became Whitney department head in 1974 after serving at the Walker Art Center; he organized Projected Video (1975) and Re-Vision (1979) and placed video in Biennials from 1973. He secured Rockefeller Foundation funding to equip the theater, is writing Expanded Form in Film and Video (due spring 1983), and pursued touring and distribution via the AFA.

  • Jeanne Finley People

    Jeanne C. Finley is an artist and filmmaker whose experimental and documentary work has been exhibited at major institutions including the Guggenheim, MoMA (San Francisco), the Whitney and the Georges Pompidou Center. Her films screened at festivals such as the San Francisco International and Toronto International, and she received a Guggenheim (1994) and a Fulbright to Yugoslavia (1989). Since 1988 she has collaborated with John Muse on experimental documentaries and multi-channel installations; the duo received a Creative Capital grant (2000) and produced works including The Trial of Harmony and Invention (2000).

  • Martha Rosler People

    Martha Rosler lives and works in New York; her videos, photo-texts, installations and performances have been presented at documenta (Kassel, Germany), several Whitney Biennials and major institutions in London and New York. A 2000 retrospective toured five European cities and New York (New Museum of Contemporary Art; International Center of Photography); in Fall 2006 she is participating in the Hannah Arendt Denkraum in Berlin and her work will be on view at the 2007 Skulptur Projekte in M¸nster, Germany and at Saigon Open City, the first biennial in Vietnam.
