  Harald Bode (born 1909, Hamburg) was an engineer and designer of electronic musical instruments; he studied physics at the University of Hamburg and did postgraduate work at the Technical University of Berlin. From 1937 he created early instruments, notably the Melodium (1938), and developed the Melochord (1947–1953), which was commissioned for the Electronic Music Studio in Cologne in 1953. He moved to the United States as Estey chief engineer in 1954, presented modular-synth concepts to the AES in 1960, founded Bode Sound Company after retiring in 1974, produced the Bode Vocoder (1977) and Barberpole Phaser (1981), published papers and held more than 50 US and foreign patents.

  Harald Bode was an audio tool design engineer born in 1909 in Germany who formed the Bode Sound Company after moving to the Buffalo area in 1961; the company marketed many of his original designs, including the Bode Frequency Shifter and Bode Vocoder. He published both individually and in collaboration with engineers and designers such as Robert Moog, collaborated with Woody and Steina Vasulka on device design and integration, and presented work at the Audio Engineering Society, Media Study/Buffalo and the Experimental Television Center; his tools and devices are found in electronic music studios around the world. Gordon Mumma described Bode as an engineering hero in the development of electronic music instruments.

  Harald Bode designed the Bode Vocoder Model No. 7702, the Warbo Formant Organ (1937, Heinrich-Herst Institut, with C. Warnke), the Melodium (shown 1938, with Oskar Vierling) and the Melochord (built 1947–1949). Model 7702 is a sixteen-channel vocoder (50–5080 Hz plus 5080–15000 Hz) with 6 ms analyzer response, voice-activated carrier/noise switching and a built-in rack-mountable power supply switchable 115/230 V. The Warbo Formant was a partially polyphonic four-voice instrument; the Melodium was a monophonic touch-sensitive keyboard with vibrato pedal; the Melochord was a monophonic 12-note-scale keyboard with octave-range switches, foot pedal and per-key envelope shaping, used at Bonn University and radio studios in Köln by Stockhausen.

  Peer Bode is an American new-media artist and educator who worked at the Experimental Television Center in Binghamton and Owego from the late 1970s and served as ETC Programs Coordinator (1977–85, 1986–87); he collaborated on hand-built and digital video instruments with David Jones and Ralph Hocking. He is Professor of Video Arts and Co-Director of the Institute for Electronic Arts at Alfred University; his work is produced at ETC, the IEA and Pep Studios, and Transport (2001) was shown at the 2003 European Media Art Festival.
