Helen Thorington
Helen Thorington is a writer, sound composer and media artist, whose radio documentary and dramatic work, and sound/music compositions have been aired nationally and internationally. Thorington has also created compositions for dance, film & video, and installation that have been premiered at the Alternative Museum, Dance Theater Workshop, The Kitchen, the Berlin Film Festival, the Whitney Biennial, and in the Whitney Museum's annual Performance series. Thorington's web work includes the "turbulence" composition for PORT distributed live by RealAudio to the Internet and to the List Center for the Visual Arts at MIT in February and March 1997; narrative works, North Country: Part 1 (1996) and Part 2 (1997); Solitaire, with Marianne Petit and John Neilson (1998), and Adrift, a networked collaboration with Marek Walzcak and Jesse Gilbert, originally created for the Ars Electronica Festival in Linz, Austria in September 1997.
Thorington has also taken part as a composer in a number of national and transatlantic webcasts. Thorington is the Executive Director of New Radio and Performing Arts, Inc. (aka Ether-Ore), the founder and producer of the national weekly radio series, New American Radio, and founder and producer of the turbulence and somewhere websites. Thorington is a writer, sound composer, and radio producer whose documentary, dramatic, and sound/music compositions have been aired nationally and internationally for the past twenty years. In August 2002, she performed an original composition with the Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company at Jacob's Pillow. Thorington has also created compositions for film and installation that have been premiered at the Berlin Film Festival, the Whitney Biennial, and in the Whitney Museum's annual Performance series.
Thorington has produced narrative works for the web including Solitaire, which combines game and storytelling. In 1997 she initiated the Adrift project (1997-2002), an evolving multi-location Internet performance collaboration with Marek Walczak and Jesse Gilbert (http://turbulence.org/adrift). Gilbert and Thorington also initiated a number of distributed musical performances, which included musicians performing at various locations in New York City and at Mills College, Oakland, CA. It was her recollections of Adrift and thoughts about the directions it might have taken that prompted her interest in exploring current networked performance practice. This, in turn, led to her contacting Michelle Riel and with turbulence's co-director, Jo-Anne Green, to the development of the networked_performance blog.
