Abstract

The Human Figure in Motion. This book begins with an Introduction: Eadward Muybridge and His Work by Robert Taft, a professor at the University of Kansas. Detailed Contents follow: Men Walking, Running, Jumping, Throwing and Catching, Kicking, Batting, and Rowing, Acrobatics and Fencing, Various Trades, Standing, Sitting, and Lying Down, Women Walking, Picking up and Putting down, Standing, Hopping, Jumping, Climbing, and Crawling, Dancing and Turning, Throwing, Sitting, Kneeling, Lying down, Rising, and Children Walking and Running, Crawling and Climbing, and Picking up and Carrying. The sequence of phases in most of the plates is from left to right. Although the individual frames are lightly numbered, an arrow is placed beneath each plate where the sequence is from right to left. The time interval between frames is given in all cases where it is known.

    Ralph Hocking offers an artist statement for a computer-based installation slated for fall 1999; his listed installation works are Jump, diggit and Running, and he links the project to prior study in pottery. The work uses four to nine monitors, each driven by its own Amiga with one video and two audio outputs and a serial link to a master referee computer; the Amiga provides four oscillators and image and sound sampling, and imagery is altered by digital processing techniques including convolving, bit swapping and field manipulation, producing three-dimensional illusions. The project is part of Motion: The 58th Exhibition of Central New York Artists at the Munson Williams Proctor Institute, October 2, 1999 to January 2, 2000, curated by John Knecht.

    Set in Motion is a retrospective of films and videotapes funded by the New York State Council on the Arts between 1961 and 1993; it was organized from NYSCA planning meetings to review the agency's mission and accomplishments. The text chronicles NYSCA initiatives including the 1967 Film Program, the addition of support for small-format video in 1970, the 1976 Bicentennial Film Project with NEA matching funds, the 1972 TV Lab at WNET/13, and the 1984 Individual Artists Program; it names staff and advisors such as John Hightower, Peter Bradley, Debby Silverfine, Linda Earle and Leanne Mella. It documents statewide training, exhibition and production programs, foundation partners (Ford, Rockefeller) and numerous community media organizations and workshops supported by NYSCA.
