The Independent Film Community published. This report was generated by the Mohonk Conference.

The report suggested that there were common areas of concern shared by all media centers; these included issues of visibility, funding, communications and publication of efforts and programs. National leadership was identified as a shared need; advocacy on a national level and public education about the activities of all media centers, including the "alternative" centers, was important to advancement of the field.

    Mohonk Conference, officially titled the Conference on Regional Development of Film Centers and Services, was organized by the Museum of Modern Art and the Pacific Film Archives and convened at Mohonk, NY in February 1973; it was attended by about 30 directors of regional media programs. About 33% of participants represented organizations that did not exist at the time of the Stanford Report (1967); most participants represented foundations, universities, museums and governmental entities while alternative spaces were not represented. Conference support came from the Rockefeller Foundation, the John and Mary Markle Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts, and the report The Independent Film Community was published in 1977.

    Independent video and film producers increased political organizing to gain programming and funding access; AIVF lobbied the Corporation for Public Broadcasting during its reorganization after the Carnegie Commission report and advocated a clear definition of independents and Program Fund set-asides. A dispute at WNET-Channel 13 over four peer-panel-selected films produced the Coalition To Make Public Television Public, meetings with president Jay Iselin on Feb. 11 and a protest at Lincoln Center on Feb. 24, and scrutiny of station finances. Independent feature filmmakers formed the Independent Feature Project (director Joy Pereths) after a New York Film Festival market (Sept. 1979); national organizing includes a Minnewaska meeting (April 1979) leading to a NAMAC conference in Boulder (May 29–31).

  • Pittsburgh Filmmakers Chronology

    Pittsburgh Filmmakers convened a meeting in June 1978 to address issues raised by the Mohonk Conference and the publication The Independent Film Community; participants judged the public unaware of independent media activities and national organizations such as the AFI insufficiently responsive. Twenty-three of the largest media centers attended but the meeting was not representative, prompting a perception that national, unified action was needed. A Steering Committee was formed to call the 1979 Minnewaska Conference; it represented the Rocky Mountain Film Center, the Northwest Film Study Center, the Bay Area Video Coalition, Pittsburgh Filmmakers, the Boston Film/Video Foundation and AIVF.

    Chronology of the National Alliance of Media Arts and Culture (NAMAC) tracing developments from 1967 through the founding conference in Boulder, CO, May 29–31, 1980. It records antecedent studies and conferences including the Stanford Report (1967), the Mohonk Conference (1973), the Pittsburgh Conference (1978) and the Minnewaska/1979 National Conference; funding came from the Rockefeller Foundation, the John and Mary Markle Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts, and publications include The Independent Film Community (1977) and the 1979 conference report. Organizers and leaders named include Virgil Grillo and Robert Haller; NAMAC approved bylaws, set objectives and identified 17 project areas including network feasibility, touring projects, surveys and information exchange.
