    New Work in Abstract Video Imagery is an anthology of videotapes produced 1973–1977 and organized for the Everson Museum of Art, Syracuse in 1977; it documents experiments with television, magnets, videosynthesizers, lasers and computers and includes works by Nam June Paik (magnet experiments; Paik/Abe videosynthesizer), Shuya Abe, Aldo Tambellini (Black Spiral, 1968), Peter Van Riper, Mary Lucier (Fire Writing), John Cage (Suite 212), Ron Hays and many Chicago-based practitioners. Production centers cited include the New Television Laboratory at WGBH, the Sandin Image Processor at the Art Institute of Chicago, the Experimental Television Center (Binghamton) and Bell Labs; the New York State Council on the Arts provided support. The exhibition was organized by Richard Simmons as an artists' cooperative with revenues divided equally among participants.

  • International Student Residency Chronology

    International Student Residency took place June 4-15, 2001, at the Experimental Television Center in partnership with the Institute for Electronic Arts at Alfred University; the annual working residency provided academic credit through an intensive collaborative experience for graduate and undergraduate media arts students. Instructors were Pamela Hawkins, Director of the ISR, and Hank Rudolph, with Lara Davis as Assistant Director of the ISR Program; guest lecturers included Torsten Burns, Andrew Deutsch, Kristin Lucan and Joe McKay.

  • Information, Works and Activities Chronology

    Experimental Television Center presented the exhibition Information, Works and Activities at the Everson Museum of Art in Syracuse, November 6–28, 1976; the program comprised installations, systems demonstrations, lectures, performances and continuous tape screening. Featured works and activities included projects by Peer Bode, Ralph Hocking, David Jones (Jones Video Synthesizer), Don McArthur (Computer Controlled Systems Graphics), Evangelos Dousmanis and Melanie Salzberg (multimedia portrait of Alfred Skerritt), Meryl Blackman, Sherry Miller, Walter Wright, Neil Zusman and Jane Wright. Videotapes were produced at the Center and the program was curated by Peer Bode and Sherry Miller; a broader list of participating artists is provided.

    Conference partners comprise arts organizations, museums, service providers and commercial developers. Notable entries include the Experimental Television Center (founded 1971 from a 1969 Binghamton University program), offering residencies, analog and digital tools and the on-going Video History Project; the Andy Warhol Foundation (est. 1987); Dave Jones Design, maker of LasrPlay and VMUX hardware; the Everson Museum of Art; the Institute for Electronic Arts at Alfred University (est. 1997) with named staff and corporate sponsors; Light Work; Media Alliance; NYFA and the New York State Council on the Arts; VidiPax, a magnetic-media restorer; and Visual Studies Workshop.
