  • U.S. National Science Foundation Chronology

    The U.S. National Science Foundation initiated NSFNET, an Internet backbone with 45 megabit per second facilities carrying 12 billion packets monthly. NASA and the U.S. Department of Energy contributed NSINET and ESNET; in Europe backbones such as NORDUNET connect over one hundred thousand computers and commercial providers are beginning to offer backbone and access services. Regional support is provided by consortia and local institutions; support has come from federal and state governments, industry and cooperative international research organizations; since 1989 the Internet has emphasized multiprotocol interworking and OSI integration.

    Transmission control protocol TCP established and Internet Protocol for use with ARPANET. This leads to one of the first definitions of an "internet" as a connected set of networks, specifically those using TCP/IP, and "Internet" as connected TCP/IP internets
