Joseph Beuys, born 1921 in Krefeld and raised in Kleve and Rindern, studied at the D¸sseldorf Academy of Art (graduated 1952) and made drawings, sculptures, installations and performances (actions) using materials such as fat, felt, earth, honey and blood. He taught at his alma mater, worked with Fluxus, helped found the German Student Party (1967), the Organization for Direct Democracy by Referendum (1970), the Free International University (1972) and the Green Party (1979); he was dismissed in 1972, had a 1979 Guggenheim retrospective and died in 1986 in D¸sseldorf.
