Janene Higgins

Janene Higgins' videos and digital media have been described as "abstract narratives: undefinable journeys filled with sudden layerings and allurings." Her videos began as a direct offshoot of her graphic design, incorporating collage, text, and image-layering into a time-based artform. Long a fan of the computer and all its possibilities, she was introduced to video via Quicktime movies.

Her work today is generated from a combination of analog and digital methods. Higgins has directed numerous short videos and several installations; in the realm of live video performance, she has collaborated with many of New York's preeminent composers and improvisors of new music, including duo performances with Elliott Sharp, Ikue Mori, Mari Kimura, Alan Licht, Nurit Tilles, Aki Onda, Okkyung Lee, and Zeena Parkins. Her work has been performed and exhibited at The New York Video Festival at Lincoln Center; Documenta in Kassel, Germany; Museum of Contemporary Art, Lyon; City of Women festival, Slovenia; The Chelsea Art Museum, NYC; MAD '03 in Madrid; Art Institute of Chicago; Experimenta Festival in Buenos Aires; The Hamburg Short Film Festival; and at The Impakt Festival in The Netherlands.

She has given workshops on her approach to video performance at A.I.R. gallery, NYC ("Women/Talk/Art/Technology" series), the Watson Festival at Carnegie Mellon University, and the Chelsea Art Museum ("Introductions" series, presented by the Electronic Music Foundation). After numerous residencies at The Experimental Television Center, she was a recipient of their Electronic Arts Grant.

    Katherine Liberovskaya is a video and media artist based in Montreal and New York; she has worked in experimental video since the late eighties and produced single-channel videos, installations and performances. Her recent practice centers on collaborations with new-music composers and sound artists and, since 2003, on live video mixing and improvisation with numerous musicians.     Nancy Meli Walker is a video artist who improvises with video, paints with light and investigates the union of sound and image; she co-founded the Performed Audio/Video (PAV) groups NNeng and The Poool. Her live video productions include collaborations with David Weinstein, Julie Nichols, Elise Kermani, 77Hz, Barbara Held and Hoppy Kamiyama performed in USA, Barcelona, Madrid and Tokyo. Her solo work spans photography, glass sculpture and 3D animation presented as installations, 2D and sculpture; she has held residencies at the Experimental Television Center, Women's Studio Workshop and HarvestWorks.

    Nam June Paik is presented as a seminal figure in the emergence of video art; he experimented with television in Germany and Japan, moved to New York in 1964, and with Shuya Abe developed the Video Synthesizer in 1970, producing works such as the T. V. Chair and the Television Bra. The text surveys artists working in video—Keith Sonnier, Linda Benglis, Joan Jonas, Nancy Holt, William Wegman, Michael Snow, Bruce Nauman, Peter Campus and George Boiling—and documents practices using portable videotape recorders, live feedback, colorization and synthesized color, video environments, and independent video groups and cable/public-access distribution.
