Jeanne Finley

Jeanne C. Finley is an artist and filmmaker whose work ranges from experimental to documentary forms. Her work has been exhibited internationally, including at the Guggenheim Museum (New York), the Museum of Modern Art (San Francisco), the Whitney Museum (New York) and the Georges Pompidou Center (Paris). Her award-winning films have been screened at film and video festivals in the United States and abroad, including the San Francisco International Film Festival; the Toronto International Film Festival; the Fringe Film & Video Festival, Edinburgh; the Muu Media Festival, Helsinki; and the Berlin Video Festival.

She has been honored with a variety of awards and grants, including an Alpert/Cal Arts Award in Film/Video, 1999; Xerox Parc Artist Fellowship, Palo Alto, CA, 1995; John Simon Guggenheim Foundation, 1994; and a Fulbright Fellowship to Yugoslavia, 1989. She is a professor of Media Studies at the California College of Arts and Crafts, San Francisco.

Jeanne C. Finley and John Muse have worked collaboratively on numerous experimental documentaries and multi-channel video installations since 1988. These works have been exhibited nationally and internationally, at festivals and galleries, including the San Francisco International Film Festival, Berlin Video Festival, Toronto, and World Wide Video Festival. They received a Creative Capital Foundation Grant in 2000, and served as Artists in Residence at the Xerox Palo Alto Research Center from 1995 to 1996. Finley and Muse published an essay detailing their experience at Xerox PARC in "Art and Innovation," MIT Press, 1998 (http://www.pair.xerox.com/MITbook/jmjfwpt/). Finley and Muse's film, video and installation credits include: "The Trial of Harmony and Invention," 2000; "The Adventures of Blacky," 1999; and "O Night Without Objects," 1998. These works have won awards at festivals such as the International Jewish Festival, the Charlotte Film Festival and the Black Maria Film & Video Festival.

    Kristine Marx holds a BA from Sarah Lawrence College and an MFA from Hunter College; she has served as lecturer at the Whitney Museum of American Art and at the Hudson River Museum and has curated shows for several galleries in Manhattan. Her work has been exhibited at Plane Space, NY and in group exhibitions in New York, Los Angeles, Canada and Germany. She has received awards from the Bronx Museum of Art, the Arts Project of Japan and Hunter College, including Schloss Plueschow (Germany), AIM at the Bronx Museum (NY) and the William Graf Travel Scholarship (Hunter College); she worked in the Residency Program at the Experimental Television Center and lists www.kristinemarx.net.

    Judith Barry is an author, artist, writer and designer who works across video, sculpture, photography, performance and theater; her installations have been exhibited at institutions including the Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Museum of Contemporary Art Los Angeles, the University Art Museum Berkeley, the Venice Biennale, the Institute of Contemporary Art London and Centre Pompidou, Paris. Her writing appears in edited volumes and journals including Blasted Allegories, Video by Artists II, The Un/Necessary Image, Discourse and Screen. She won the 2000 Kiesler Prize for Architecture and the Arts and received Best Pavilion and Audience Award at the 2001 Cairo Biennale.

  • Peggy Gale People

    Born in Guyana and educated in Florence and at the University of Toronto (honours B.A., 1967), Peggy Gale worked at the Art Gallery of Ontario before serving as Art Metropole's first Video/Film Director (1975–79). From 1974 (full-time since 1981) she worked as an independent curator and writer; she served as Canadian commissioner to the XIV Bienal Internacional de S„o Paulo (1977) and the XII Biennale de Paris (1982) and curated internationally in Berlin, Vancouver, Madrid and Tokyo. She curated and hosted TVOntario's 1994 series Video Art Vidéo, published Videotexts (1995) and edited Video re/View (1996), and has served on national arts juries and committees.
