Jeanne Liotta - Film Studies

Jeanne Liotta (b.NYC 1960) has been making films and other cultural ephemera since 1987 when she made her first super-8 film 'Blue Moon' for an international collaborative project called the Filmer's Almanac.

Her interest in artistic collaboration stems from her early theatre training and work with The Living Theatre and Alchemical Theatre in the 80's, and carried her into a 10 year media collaboration with Bradley Eros, with whom she made films, video and performance until 1995. During that time she also worked with the noise/band art collective Circle X doing live film performances and artists book projects. Since 1996 she has been working independently in film and video, as well as other media including work for the Web, installation, and photography.

She has received awards from Harvestworks, the Experimental Television Center's Finishing Funds Program, Black Maria Film Festival, US Super 8 Film and Video Festival and the Franklin Furnace Fund for Performance Art. Her work is widely shown and has appeared at NY Underground Film Festival, The International Film Festival Rotterdam, the Viper International Film Festival, European Media Arts Festival, MIX Festival, The Museum of Modern Art, The Whitney Museum of American Art 'Color of Ritual, Color of Thought: Women Filmmakers of the Avant-Garde 1943-2000', and The Sundance Channel 'Every Picture Does Not Tell A Story'.

In Fall 2002 she was a fellow at the MacDowell Colony. She was invited by The San Francisco Cinematheque to present a retrospective of her film and video works at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts.

Liotta has taught at The New School, Binghamton University, Pratt Institute, Adelphi and Cooper Union, The School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, Binghamton University and Pratt.

Her film, 'Loretta' was screened at the New York Film Festival 'Views from the Avant-Garde'.

In addition to her artistic work, she was also a special researcher at The Anthology Film Archives on The Joseph Cornell Collection, and worked on a monograph on his films.

    Marie Losier (born France, 1972) is a New York–based filmmaker and curator who has produced numerous 16mm and video portraits of avant-garde artists and musicians including Mike and George Kuchar, Guy Maddin, Richard Foreman, Tony Conrad and Genesis P-Orridge; her films have screened at institutions and festivals such as Tate Modern, MoMA, the Whitney Biennial (2006) and the Berlin and Rotterdam film festivals. She has curated film programs at the French Institute Alliance Fran3aise since 2000 and has developed a feature on Genesis Breyer P-Orridge presented at Centre Pompidou and Cin9math8que Fran7aise in 2009.

  • Diane Bonder People

    Diane Bonder is an experimental filmmaker who has worked for ten years in super-8 and 16mm, using documentary, poetic and semi-narrative forms to address autobiographical themes of identity, sexuality, addiction, memory and loss. Her work has screened internationally, including at The New Museum of Contemporary Art, The Whitney Museum and The Brooklyn Museum of Art; she has received awards including a Lyn Blumenthal Memorial Award and a Mid-Atlantic Media Fellowship. She serves on the screening committee of the New Festival; Berks Filmmakers and Alissa Lebow note her combination of varied moving-image media into a playful experimental esthetic.

    Painter-turned-filmmaker adopted a Sony CV open-reel video camera in the late 1960s while teaching in The Bronx and funded the purchase with a bank loan; he produced experimental videotapes including CRIPPLE and KELSEY (screened at the First Documentary Festival of Global Village) and ran a Video Journal from 1971 to 1975. After returning from Europe he bought S-8 sound equipment, produced films including RUNNER (1981), learned double-system sound editing at Lindo's in Brooklyn, composed synthesized soundtracks and offered S-8 post-production in New York to clients from New England and Latin America.

  • Lynn Blumenthal People

    Lyn Blumenthal was an artist, educator and administrator who advanced independent video as a critical cultural medium; her work exposed mainstream media blind spots and contributed to feminist and de-constructionist dialogues alongside Martha Rosler, Dara Birnbaum and Paper Tiger Television. Beginning in the early 1970s she collaborated with Kate Horsfield on videotaped interviews of women artists and in 1976 co-founded the Video Data Bank at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago; in the early 1980s her videotapes investigated women's identity and sexuality through theoretical analysis and humor.
