Jed Speare is an artist working in a variety of media. Initially trained in music composition, he has made multidisciplinary work in time-based media such as sound art, performance, video, and film, and has also exhibited conceptual and community-based work in museums and galleries, regionally and internationally. He has performed at the Festival Mondiale du Theater, Nancy, France, touring in France and Italy, and in Amsterdam at the Mickery and Frascati Theaters, and at the Shaffy Theater as a featured artist in So und So und So II Visual Music Days Festival. He has also worked with, created music and soundscores, directed, and/or collaborated with numerous performance artists in San Francisco, Amsterdam, and New York including Joan Jonas, Bob Ernst, Rob List, Wendelien Haveman, and Barbara Duifjes, touring in Holland. Speare is the creator of the sound documentary/industrial sound composition record, Cable Car Soundscapes on Smithsonian Folkways Records, and has other audio work on San Francisco's Subterranean Records, and in the collections of NOS Radio (Netherlands) and Stichting Time-Based Arts (Amsterdam). In 1998, he received a medal from the Secretary of the Smithsonian awarded to all Folkways artists. Speare's multimedia performance, Elegy, premiered at Mobius in April 1997, and was later presented at the Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston in conjunction with the exhibition, Enterprise. As a visual artist, he has exhibited in the Boston area at the DeCordova Museum (The Computer in the Studio, 1994), at the Fitchburg Art Museum (solo exhibition, A Quiet Zone, 1995), and at Mobius.. Speare has also been active as a curator of time-based art programs of sound art, video, and performance, at venues including Mobius, Kingston Art Gallery, Harvard Film Archive, Koppelman Gallery at Tufts University, The All Newton Music School, and Ed Mock Dance Studio in San Francisco. He has taught courses in Acoustic Communication, Music Composition, Zines, and Time-Based Arts at the Theatreschool Mime Opleiding in Amsterdam, the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and the All Newton Music School. A member of the Mobius Artists Group since 1995, he became Co-Director of the organization in 1996, and Director in 1998. In recent years, Speare has been awarded five consecutive annual residencies at the Experimental Television Center Owego, N.Y. He has also been a participant in Boston and Taiwan in the Boston/Tainan Art and Urban Design Cultural Exchange, and Taking Liberty/ Usvajanje Slobode, a cultural exchange between members of the Mobius Artists Group and artists from the Istria region of Croatia, and Digging the Channel/Mediating the Channel.," a Zadar, Croatia/Mobius. Boston cultural exchange in 2001-2002. In September 2002, he was a participant in the 10th annual Castle of Imagination International Performance Art Festival in Ustka, Poland with the multimedia performance, Kosy Nier (Scythe Man). The Polish press called Kosy Nier, " one of the best performances of the festival." Over the past two years, he has also been a contributing writer on Performance Art for Art New England. In August and September 2003, he traveled to Poland and to Minsk, Belarus, to participate in the 11th Annual Castle of Imagination International Performance Art Festival and the 5th Annual Navinki Festival of International Performance Art.
