Jesse Lerner

Jesse Lerner is a documentary film and video maker based in Los Angeles. His short films T.S.H. (2004), and Natives (1991, with Scott Sterling) and the feature experimental documentaries Frontierland (1995, with Rubén Ortiz), Ruins (1999), and The American Egypt (2001) have won prizes at film festivals in the United States, Latin America, and Japan.

He is an Associate Professor in the Intercollegiate Media Studies Program of the Claremont Colleges.

His exhibitions and screenings include The Gene Siskel Film Center (Chicago), the New York Jewish Film Festival, PBS broadcast, the Museum of Contemporary Art (Chicago), the Sundance Film Festival, and the Whitney Biennial (NY); his awards include a John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowship, Jerome Foundation Grant, Art Matters Grant, New York State Council for the Arts Distribution Grant, Banff Centre for the Arts Residency, and Rockefeller Intercultural Film/Video Arts Fellowship.

  • John Knecht People

    Professor of Film and Video in the Department of Art and Art History at Colgate University in Hamilton, New York; programmer for the Alternative Cinema series at Colgate and curator of MOTION at Munson Williams Proctor Arts Institute in Utica. Experimental film and video artist active since 1973 with screenings at international festivals including Viper Festival (Basel), European Media Arts Festival (Osnabruck), Dallas Video Festival and World Wide Video Festival (the Haag). Has received awards including the Judges Award at Black Maria Festival and Juror's Citation at the American Film Institute Video Festival; exhibits and single-channel tapes and 16mm films are available from the artist and New York Filmmaker's Coop. Ten video installations were constructed between 1984 and 2000.

  • Video History: Making Connections - Seminars

    Video Rewind: A Seminar on Early Video History (October 16, 1998) was a day-long seminar introducing curators, critics, librarians, archivists, funders, artists and students to independent video in America (1965–1980); it offered screenings, lectures and discussions on video art, documentary tapes and topics such as portapaks, closed-circuit video, collectives and cable TV. Seminar leader Deirdre Boyle (The New School) presented alongside Barbara London (Curator of Video, MoMA), Paul Ryan (McLuhan fellow) and Parry Teasdale (Videofreex). A full-day Video Preservation session, co-sponsored and organized by Media Alliance and Mona Jimenez, gathered representatives to report on preservation initiatives and funding trends.

  • Greg Berger People

    Greg Berger is a filmmaker and professor of video who produces award-winning documentaries on grassroots social movements in Mexico and the Americas and has made experimental short narratives on Revolutionary Tourism. He coordinates the Dispatches From America Rebelde tour, bringing Latin American social-justice documentaries to United States universities and community centers with moderated virtual town meetings between US audiences and activists in Mexico and Bolivia; his work has screened on six continents. His 2004 short GringotÛn received the Latin American Studies Association Award for Merit in Film.
