Jim Hubbard

Jim Hubbard began making films in 1975 and for many years has been concerned with issues of film and video preservation. In 1987 he co-founded the New York Lesbian and Gay Experimental Film Festival. From 1991 through 1996 he worked at Anthology Film Archives.

In conjunction with the National Moving Image Database project of the American Film Institute he created the first computer catalog of Anthology's film and video collection encompassing over 5,000 titles. Under a grant from the Jerome Foundation he inventories and catalogued the entire Jerome Hill Collection. He also researched a report on the need for archival storage of work by makers with AIDS for Media Network, a national organization promoting social change. He authored Meeting the Challenges of Video Preservation, with Mona Jimenez, for Media Alliance and continues to work closely with IMAP.

  • Meeting the Challenges of Video Preservation: A Progress Report on Initiatives within the Media Arts Field by Media Alliance Preservation

    Media Alliance (founded 1979) is a New York State advocacy and service organization for independent media arts that led a 1991 national video survey and symposium with NYSCA, supported Deirdre Boyle's Video Preservation (1993), and applied to NEH for a cooperative catalog of over 8,000 titles across twelve New York institutions. The report documents Playback 1996 organized with BAVC (March 29–30, 1996) at the Museum of Modem Art with Getty and Andy Warhol Foundation funding, NAMID/FileMakerPro cataloging pilots producing over 1,800 records, and BAVC remastering and cleaning services for obsolete formats. Jim Hubbard authored the report and created Anthology Film Archives' first computer catalog under NAMID and a Jerome Foundation grant.

  • Anthology Film Archives Chronology

    Anthology Film Archives initiated a video preservation project in 1983 with pilot funding from the New York State Council on the Arts; the project aimed to identify and locate independent video-makers in the United States, borrow and rerecord video works endangered by age or format obsolescence, and preserve the re-recordings under specified temperature/humidity conditions. As of August 1983 work was underway in all three areas; the next issue of Video Texts will present a report on the project's first year.

    A Video Data Bank author reports on videotape preservation practice and supervised preservation of the Castelli-Sonnabend collection and the compilation of 65 titles for Surveying the First Decade; core procedures described include transfers among formats (1/2" open reel, 1" IVC, 3/4" U-matic, digital), cleaning, reference copies, two masters, cataloging and storage. He details technical problems (drop-out, skew, deck differences, TBC use) and aesthetic/legal dilemmas about edits and distribution; institutional activity by BAVC, Media Alliance and MoMA and funders such as the Andy Warhol Foundation and Getty Grant Program are noted.   • Bob Harris People

    Bob Harris holds a BA from Colgate University and an MFA from the University of California, San Diego; he served as Artistic Director of the NY State Education Department's Summer School of the Media Arts and taught at Ithaca College, UCSD, and Palomar College. He helped found the Video Department at Anthology Film Archives, was Video Curator at Anthology and PS #1 in Queens, NY from 1979 to 1986, and founded at Anthology the first video preservation project in the nation; as a film and video maker his work, including COYOTE, has won festival awards and been shown at institutions such as the Whitney Museum of American Art, Museo Laboratorio di Arte Contemporanea in Rome, Exit Art, Anthology Film Archives, and Palais de Beux Arts in Brussels.

    Account of the deterioration and neglect of independently produced videotape since the 1960s, tracing preservation concerns to NEA support for the American Film Institute and the early Film and Television Archives Advisory Committee (later AMIA); it documents the finite lifespan of videotape, the dispersal of collections, and limited resources for care.
