Joan Jonas is a multimedia visual and performance artist who has performed in the United States and Europe since the late 1960s. She received fellowships and grants from the New York State Council on the Arts, the National Endowment for the Arts, the Guggenheim and Rockefeller Foundations, and the Contemporary Art Television Fund.

Joan Jonas is a pioneer of video and performance art whose experiments in the late 1960s and early 1970s helped shape the genre. She has collaborated with composer Alvin Lucier, performed with The Wooster Group, and her recent work explores digital media and performance; she is developing a performance for the Museum of Modern Art in Dublin where three of her installations will be included. She has received fellowships and grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Rockefeller Foundation, the CAT Fund, the Artist TV Lab at WNET/13 and the DAAD, has won the Hyogo Prefecture Museum of Modern Art Prize, the Polaroid Award for Video and the AFI Maya Deren Award, and in 1994 had a major retrospective at the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam.
