John Columbus

John Columbus developed an interest in filmmaking at an early age, in part inspired by a trip to the Edison Labs in West Orange, NJ. He attended the Newark School of Fine and Industrial Arts before transferring to Swain School of Design, which is now part of Southeastern Massachusetts University, in New Bedford, MA.

    A SUNY Binghamton graduate and programmer active since 1971 reports that the Black Maria Film and Video Festival tours experimental films and video art to remote locales, including Central/Western New York. He notes a Central New York Programmers Group and cites regional centers such as Owego Experimental TV Center, Portable Channel (Rochester), Ithaca Video Project and Media Study/Buffalo. He credits SUNY Binghamton—recently turned twenty—faculty including Ken Jacobs and alumni with shaping programming and pedagogy, and names works such as Tom Tom the Piper's Son and other historical and contemporary experimental films.

  • Ken Jacobs People

    Ken Jacobs, born Brooklyn, NY in 1933, served two years in the Coast Guard and used the GI Bill to study painting and film; he studied painting with Hans Hofmann in 1956–57. He created and directed The Millennium Film Workshop, NYC (1966–68), founded the Dept. of Cinema at SUNY Binghamton in 1969 and held the Professor of Cinema (1974–2000), Distinguished Professor (2000) and Emeritus (2002) titles. His grants and awards include D.A.A.D. 1986; Maya Deren Award 1994; Guggenheim and NEA 1995; Rockefeller Foundation and numerous NYFA, NYSCA and festival prizes 1999–2010; Tom, Tom, The Piper's Son was named to the National Film Registry on Dec. 27, 2007.

  • Stephan Apicella-Hitchcock People

    Stephan Apicella-Hitchcock holds an MFA from Rhode Island School of Design and a BA from Hampshire College; he is Assistant Professor of Photography and Graphic Design at Fordham University and has taught at School of Visual Arts, Parsons and the School of Fine Arts in Boston. He has received awards from the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council, CEPA Gallery and Visual Studies Workshop. His work has been exhibited in White Hot, Uprising at VideoSpace Gallery, the Short Attention Span Festival and venues including CEPA Gallery, the Contemporary Museum of Baltimore and the Whitney Museum; it has been published in CEPA Journal and Artvoice.

  • Anne Marie Stein People

    Anne Marie Stein is Assoc. Dean of Professional and Continuing Education at the Massachusetts College of Art; from 2001-05 she was Director of Development for Northern Light Productions, overseeing business development and working on documentary projects. She served on national granting committees and panels and spent seven years on the Board of Directors and Executive Committee of the national coalition for media arts organizations, NAMAC; she co-founded the Boston International Festival of Women's Cinema and was co-director for many years of the New England Film & Video Festival.

  • Richard Herskowitz People

    Richard Herskowitz has been Artistic Director of the Virginia Film Festival since 1994; previously he directed the Cornell Cinema for twelve years, programming nearly 500 films and special programs annually. He served as adjunct curator at the Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art; authored film commentary; programmed the Robert Flaherty Film Seminar in 1987, 1991 (Riga, Latvia) and 1999; he received an M.A. in film studies from the University of Wisconsin in 1978 and has taught film courses at U.Va., Cornell and Rutgers.
